Last month, Vince Staples dropped his new studio album, Cry Baby. The hard-hitting body of work has been the topic of many online conversations, given its commentary surrounding current social and political affairs. But the “Blackberry Marmalade” rapper wants to curate another kind of music chat.
Today (July 8) on Instagram, Vince Staples announced his return to Apple Music Radio. Beginning Friday, July 10, at 11 a.m. Pacific Time, and every Friday after, fans can catch Staples’ new show, 5 On Fridays.
Similar to Ramona Radio, his 2024 episodic series, 5 On Fridays, will feature Staples diving into his five favorite fresh music releases. As an acclaimed musician, Staples’ mission is to “unpack the connections between songs, producers, and eras.”
In the promotional trailer, Staples teased what’s to come and called back to his previous show.
“Hey, what’s up? It’s Vince Staples here with a special announcement,” he opened the clip. “Now you probably know me from the world-famous, riveting, captivating show ‘Ramona Radio.’ The sad news, it got cancelled.”
He continued, “But the good news, we have a brand new show titled ‘5 On Fridays.’ Where we’ll take five songs, brand new songs, and play them. We’ll also play other songs that inspire us. That’s it.”
He closed the clip stating what listeners should not expect.
“No clickbait,” Staples sternly said. “No interviews. No bullsh*t. Hopefully you love music, because that’s all we got.”
In a statement shared with ENVERT, Staples expanded on his discoverability approach to 5 On Fridays.
“In the past few years we’ve had people come out of the woodwork and drop amazing music,” said Staples. “The songwriting? Impeccable. And it’s only getting better.”
Apple Music doubled down on the show’s purpose, captioning its Instagram post: “No clickbait. No interviews. Just music.”
