Treading the same lines as Modern Baseball and the Front Bottoms, California-based Mom Jeans. deliver an affecting, heart-on-sleeve mix of emo-tinged indie rock, as heard on their 2016 debut, Best Buds, and subsequent efforts Puppy Love (2018) and Sweet Tooth (2022). Formed in Berkeley, California while studying at university, the group wasted no time in putting together their debut release, a self-titled two-track single, in 2014. A handful of demos followed before the band focused on recording their debut album. Recorded by Ryan Ellery (Just Friends, Meet Me in Montauk) and originally self-released in 2016, Best Buds was eventually picked up by indie label Counter Intuitive after earning the band plaudits for their slacker-styled, emo-tinged punk rock. Eschewing the usual route of heading out on tour to capitalize on the release, the band decided to stay in Berkeley to finish their studies, playing just select dates. A split single with Graduating Life was issued in 2017, alongside the split EP NOW That's What I Call Music, Vol. 420, which also featured Prince Daddy & the Hyena and Pictures of Vernon. The group returned in 2018 with their sophomore release, the Ellery-helmed Puppy Love. Inayah is a contemporary R&B singer and songwriter with a knack for upfront lyrics that delve deep beneath the surface of relationships. She achieved social media fame with her narrative twist on Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up" and made her commercial recorded debut in 2018. S.O.L.A.R. (2019), her first album, featured the platinum hit "Best Thing," a cathartic breakup ballad. The EPs Side A (2021) and Insecure (2022) preceded Wait, There's More (2024), a more pop-flavored (if no less frank) second full-length. The East Houston native has since released Therapy Wasn't Enough (2026), led by the yearning "Choose" and the Lil' Mo-referencing "Outside." Born Inayah Lamis in Houston, Inayah developed her storytelling writing style from absorbing the gospel, blues, and R&B records her mother played, and eventually got into hip-hop. From Johnnie Taylor to 504 Boyz, most of Inayah's formative inspirations were distinctly Southern. She had been working as a writer at a jingle company for several years when her version of "Boo'd Up" went viral on Instagram, reposted by the likes of Tiffany Haddish, Maxwell, and Jamie Foxx. Another fan was rapper Trick Daddy, who put Inayah in touch with soul legend Betty Wright, another one of her mother's favorites. Wright herself had become a fan and mentored Inayah in the music industry. After Inayah struck a distribution deal with Empire, she independently released her first singles in 2018 and 2019, and during the latter year also issued S.O.L.A.R. ("storytelling over lyrics and rhymes"), featuring production from Micah Powell, Cassius Jay, and tha Aristocrats. The album's "Suga Daddy" and "Best Thing" raised her profile considerably. Next came Side A, a six-track EP with "Fallin," "What Are We," and "Missin It" increasing the singer's commercial momentum even more. Inayah returned after the birth of her second child with Insecure, an eight-track project with openhearted material such as "Always Something" and "Most Girlz." Dua Saleh is a Minneapolis-based Sudanese-American musician and actor who artfully blends poetry, alternative rap, and moody electronic music. With a distinctive vocal style wavering between warm melodic singing and nuanced rap grit, Saleh's first EP for the Against Giants label earned critical acclaim, setting the table for subsequent releases like 2020's Rosetta and 2021's guest-heavy Crossover. After landing a recurring role on Netflix's Sex Education, they signed with Ghostly International and released the 2024 album I SHOULD CALL THEM. Featuring guests ranging from Bon Iver to Gaidaa and Aja Monet, Of Earth & Wires followed in 2026. Born in Kassala, Sudan, and bearing Tunjur heritage, Saleh moved to the U.S. as a child, fleeing the Second Sudanese Civil War with their family and eventually settling outside of Minneapolis. Drawn to poetry at a young age, they also developed a strong affinity for community organizing, which manifested itself both in their material and activism. Active on the poetry open-mike scene since their teenage years, Saleh sought a more dynamic platform for their art and made their first foray into music with local producer Mike Frey on the 2017 track "First Take." This led to a collaboration with Minneapolis hip-hop producer Psymun, which resulted in Saleh's debut EP, Nūr. Released on the Against Giants label in 2019, the EP was a resounding critical success with a unique sound and compelling, socially conscious lyrics. Their follow-up EP, Rosetta, appeared in June 2020, followed a few months later by the single "Angel Rock." After the 2021 stand-alone singles "Signs" and "Dashery," Saleh returned to the EP format with Crossover, a highly collaborative set featuring guests like Duckwrth, Amaarae, and Haleek Maul. The prolific artist continued producing tracks over the next year like 2022's "I Belong to You" and "Chosen," the latter of which appeared on an expanded 2022 version of Crossover. Around this time, Saleh's acting career got a boost when they landed a recurring role on the Netflix series Sex Education. In late 2023, they signed with Ghostly International and released the single "Daylight Falls." Their first album for the label, I SHOULD CALL THEM, appeared the following year and included collaborations with serpentwithfeet and Sid Sriram. In 2026, they began the rollout for their sophomore LP with the Bon Iver collaborations "Flood" and "Glow." Steel Beans is the musical moniker of Jeremy DeBardi, an American musician from Snohomish County, Washington, renowned for his innovative one-man band performances that combine guitar, drums, and vocals delivered simultaneously in a flamboyant, high-energy rock style. Often described as "the spearhead of the whole modern progressive metalcore movement," Birmingham, Alabama's Erra combine the frontal assault of extreme metal with an adventurous sense of melody and precise stop-and-start arrangements. Emerging in the early 2010s, the technical metalcore band entered the mainstream in 2013 with the release of their sophomore effort, Augment, which topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart. They found similar success on subsequent efforts Drift (2016) and Neon (2018), and in 2024 they issued their sixth long-player, Cure. Silence Outlives the Earth followed in 2026. Influenced by acts such as Misery Signals, As I Lay Dying, Born of Osiris, and Saosin, Erra were formed in 2009 by guitarist and clean vocalist Jesse Cash and scream vocalist Garrison Lee. Eager to move their musical ideas forward, Cash and Lee recruited their friends Adam Hicks and Alex Ballew to play bass and drums in the new group. The lineup was finalized when they discovered guitarist Alan Rigdon through his MySpace page, and they adopted the name Erra, a word referring to mayhem that can be traced back to the mythology of Akkad. In 2010, the group self-released their debut EP, Andromeda, and good reviews and an enthusiastic response from fans led to the band signing with indie label Tragic Hero Records. In 2011, Erra released their first full-length album, Impulse, which along with extensive touring helped raise their profile on the independent metal scene, leading to tours alongside August Burns Red, Born of Osiris, and Tesseract. In 2012, bassist Adam Hicks announced he was leaving the group to focus on his education, but he stayed with Erra long enough to finish work on their second LP, Augment, which was released in the fall of 2013, and became their first album to chart. Sean Price took over on bass in 2012, and in 2014, he began trading off between bass and guitar with Jesse Cash following Alan Rigdon's departure from the group in 2014. 2014 also saw the departure of gritty vocalist Garrison Lee; Ian Eubanks filled the spot from 2014 to 2015, and J.T. Cavey became their howler in 2016. The Moments of Clarity EP appeared during the transitional period in 2014, with their third studio long-player, the Sumerian-issued Drift, appearing in early 2016. The latter debuted at Number One on the U.S. Heatseekers chart, and 2018's well-received Neon managed the same feat. By this time, Conor Hesse had been installed as Erra's bassist. Erra parted ways with Sumerian in 2020 and made a lateral move to Australian heavy music label UNFD, which released their eponymous fifth full-length effort the following year. Sean Price left the lineup in 2022, and Clint Tustin joined in time for the sessions for Erra's sixth studio album, Cure, released in April 2024. Theo Croker is a storyteller who speaks through his trumpet. With her throaty vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, Cummings conjures the sound of the early-'60s folk revival, singing with great command her poetic musings to a minimalist accompaniment that alternates between fevered strumming and delicate fingerpicking. She'd barely begun gigging locally when a Facebook video of her singing Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," caught the attention of Flightless Records, the label run by Melbourne psych favorites King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. By the beginning of 2019, Cummings was opening regional shows for J Mascis and Do Re Mi and working on her first album. Released later that November, Refuge Cove bore a vintage analog tone and presented Cummings' earthy folk songs in a spacious, all-acoustic setting. By late 2021, Cummings had joined the roster of American imprint ATO Records, which released her follow-up LP in January 2022. While maintaining the organic feel of her debut, Storm Queen found the singer leaning into different textures and instrumentation to frame her turbulent songs. For her third full-length effort, 2024's Ramona, she worked with producer Jonathan Wilson (Margo Price, Father John Misty) on a dramatic set of songs that paired opulent orchestral arrangements with Cummings' assured storytelling and powerful vocals. Singer and songwriter Mon Rovîa is a Liberian-born/Tennessee-based artist with an intimately rendered sound informed by lyrical indie pop, folk, and traditions of his native West Africa. Buoyed by a strong social media following, he debuted in 2021 with Dark Continent, an album that showcased his atmospheric blend of acoustic and electronic sounds and found him exploring themes of trauma, mental health, and healing. Following a quartet of EPs, he returned with his 2026 sophomore full-length, Bloodline. Mon Rovîa was born Janjay Lowe in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. He was just seven years old when he was adopted by American Christian missionaries during the Second Liberian Civil War of the late '90s. Growing up, he moved several times with his family, living first in Florida, then Montana, and the Bahamas. Along the way, he was exposed to a Christian pop and worship music. However, it was at age 13 that a foster sibling introduced him to indie pop and artists like Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, and Passion Pit. He started playing guitar and was soon writing his own songs. After high school, Lowe moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to attend university. It was there that he began digging deeper into his music, crafting songs that found him coming to terms with the trauma of his youth, his survivor's guilt over having grown up away from the violence of his home country, and his hope for a better future for everyone. He eventually reached out to a former university friend, artist and label manager Eric Cromartie, who encouraged him to keep pursuing his music and helped develop his career. Adopting the stage name Mon Rovîa as a tribute to his birthplace, Lowe began posting videos on social media, where he went viral and developed a large following. In 2021, he released his debut album, Dark Continent, which found him expanding his sonic palette, blending his intimate acoustic songs with atmospheric electronics. Several EPs appeared in 2023, including Act 1: The Wandering and Act 2: Trials. He also stayed busy, delivering singles like "Cleopatra," "Outlaw for Your Love," and "City on a Hill," paving the way for 2024's Act 3: The Dying of Self EP and 2025's Act 4: Atonement EP. If *Weather Alive* lived underwater, spectral and dreamlike, *The Ground Above* marks a resurfacing. It is her most direct and unapologetic music to date; profoundly urgent, embodied, and powered by a hard-won strength. Where the previous record unfolded in a suspended dreamscape, *The Ground Above* finds Orton firmly back on land, taking a giant intake of air. It documents survival, integration and renewal without denial, acceptance without resignation. “All the songs on the record are looking through the prism of the years from many directions at once,” Orton says. “If writing songs is therapy, it’s hallucinogenic therapy. It’s working with the unconscious, it’s lucid dreaming.” The album represents independence and authorship, while being deeply collaborative at its core. Working with trusted musicians including multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Vernon Spring’s Sam Beste, drummers Tom Skinner (Sons of Kemet, The Smile) and Chris Vatalaro, and bassist Tom Herbert, Orton reaches new heights as a producer, songwriter, singer, and bandleader. Split into two distinct halves, *The Ground Above* offers a life-affirming reckoning with grief and love as parallel certainties. “What kept me alive, and sometimes nearly killed me, through most of my childhood and all the way through my early 30’s was a kind of feral invincibility, barrelling through. I said yes to life, over and over again, embraced and devoured all that I could, propelled magnetically in a flying dream that didn’t allow for time to catch up with me, except for when it did of course.” Orton says of the title track: “Love and grief are intrinsically linked. Eventually both come to stop you in your tracks, we are all vulnerable beings living out an invincible existence.” The opening tracks arrive as direct transmissions from the subconscious – raw, searching, volatile – while the latter half settles into some of Orton’s most timeless melodies, evoking Great American Songbook forms refracted through spiritual jazz and improvisation. Each song unfolds as a suite of moments, rooted in lived experience rather than nostalgia. Each of the songs carries core memories. On “Before I Knew,” Orton reflects on agency, asking how much choice any of us truly have. “So much of a life is shaped by choices made out of necessity, by survival.” The song was recorded largely live, its gentle landing belying its weight. On “Cigarette Curls,” Orton draws from a formative early friendship. “She had bleached blonde curls, and smoked and spoke French. She introduced me to Françoise Hardy and The Slits. We danced ecstatically to Blondie, singing along at the top of our voices for hours. Dua Saleh is a Minneapolis-based Sudanese-American musician and actor who artfully blends poetry, alternative rap, and moody electronic music. With a distinctive vocal style wavering between warm melodic singing and nuanced rap grit, Saleh's first EP for the Against Giants label earned critical acclaim, setting the table for subsequent releases like 2020's Rosetta and 2021's guest-heavy Crossover. After landing a recurring role on Netflix's Sex Education, they signed with Ghostly International and released the 2024 album I SHOULD CALL THEM. Featuring guests ranging from Bon Iver to Gaidaa and Aja Monet, Of Earth & Wires followed in 2026. Born in Kassala, Sudan, and bearing Tunjur heritage, Saleh moved to the U.S. as a child, fleeing the Second Sudanese Civil War with their family and eventually settling outside of Minneapolis. Drawn to poetry at a young age, they also developed a strong affinity for community organizing, which manifested itself both in their material and activism. Active on the poetry open-mike scene since their teenage years, Saleh sought a more dynamic platform for their art and made their first foray into music with local producer Mike Frey on the 2017 track "First Take." This led to a collaboration with Minneapolis hip-hop producer Psymun, which resulted in Saleh's debut EP, Nūr. Released on the Against Giants label in 2019, the EP was a resounding critical success with a unique sound and compelling, socially conscious lyrics. Their follow-up EP, Rosetta, appeared in June 2020, followed a few months later by the single "Angel Rock." After the 2021 stand-alone singles "Signs" and "Dashery," Saleh returned to the EP format with Crossover, a highly collaborative set featuring guests like Duckwrth, Amaarae, and Haleek Maul. The prolific artist continued producing tracks over the next year like 2022's "I Belong to You" and "Chosen," the latter of which appeared on an expanded 2022 version of Crossover. Around this time, Saleh's acting career got a boost when they landed a recurring role on the Netflix series Sex Education. In late 2023, they signed with Ghostly International and released the single "Daylight Falls." Their first album for the label, I SHOULD CALL THEM, appeared the following year and included collaborations with serpentwithfeet and Sid Sriram. In 2026, they began the rollout for their sophomore LP with the Bon Iver collaborations "Flood" and "Glow." Max B is an East Coast rapper known for his intense lyrical portrayals of street hustling and a streak of prolific, high-potency mixtape releases. He was a member of Jim Jones' Byrd Gang crew in the early 2000s, and left said crew in a heated and public falling out before being incarcerated in 2009. He continued to record new material while locked up and managed to release multiple mixtapes before his imprisonment, including the Million Dollar Baby series as well Coke Wave, his collaborative effort with French Montana. Upon his release in 2025, Max B released his Billboard-charting debut studio album Vigilante Season in 2011, and quickly re-entered the rap game and the charts with his 2026 mixtape Coke Wave 3.5: Narcos. Max B was born Charly Wingate in 1978. Raised in New York City in a large and struggling family, Max B turned to street crime early in life and was in jail for robbery between 1997 and 2005. Upon release, he immediately began pursuing a rap career, coming up with the stage name "Max Biggaveli" by combining the nicknames of his favorite rappers (the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Biggie Smalls," Jay-Z's "Jigga," and Tupac Shakur's short-lived "Makaveli" phase,) ultimately going by Max B for short. He was introduced to Jim Jones by his childhood friend Cam'ron, and became a key player in Jones' Byrd Gang upon their formation in 2006. His debut mixtape Million Dollar Baby was release that year, as was its successor Public Domain: Million Dollar Baby Radio. 2006 was also the year Max B was charged with felony murder connected to a robbery that took place at a Holiday Inn in New Jersey. He was in jail when third mix tape Public Domain 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer came out in 2007. All told, the rapper was incarcerated for ten months before posting two-million dollars in bail with money made by selling his publishing rights to Jones. This would be one of several financial disagreements between the two that led to Max B's departure from Byrd Gang in 2008 and a heated public beef between the two. Prolific throughout 2008 and 2009, Max B released mixtape after mixtape, including new volumes in the Public Domain and Million Dollar Baby series, Wavie Crockett, and two volumes of the Coke Wave series with French Montana. In June of 2009, he was given a 75-year sentence for his 2006 murder case. While in prison, close friend and collaborator Dame Grease put the finishing touches on the debut studio album Max B had mostly finalized in 2008, and that album, Vigilante Season, was released in 2011. The rapper also appeared on various mixtapes and features throughout his prison stay. In 2016, he took a plea deal and his sentence was dramatically reduced, and Max was released from prison in November of 2025. By January of 2026, he had already reunited with French Montana for the release of the next chapter of their Coke Wave mixtape series, Coke Wave 3.5: Narcos. The point band of the early-'90s riot grrrl movement, Olympia, Washington's Bikini Kill exploded onto the male-dominated indie rock scene by fusing the visceral power of punk with the impassioned ideals of feminism. Calling for "Revolution Girl Style Now," the group's fiercely polemical and anthemic music helped give rise to a newly empowered generation of women in rock, presaging the dominance female artists would enjoy throughout the decade. Bikini Kill formed in 1990 at Olympia's liberal Evergreen College, where students Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox first teamed to publish a feminist fanzine, also dubbed Bikini Kill. Seeking to bring the publication's agenda to life, they decided to form a band, enlisting guitarist Billy Boredom (born William Karren) to round out the lineup. Led by singer/songwriter Hanna, a former stripper, the group laced its incendiary live performances with aggressive political stances that challenged the accepted hierarchy of the underground music community; slam dancers were forced to mosh at the fringes of the stage so that women could remain at the front of the crowd, for example, and female audience members were often invited to take control of the microphone to openly discuss issues of sexual abuse and misconduct. In 1991, Bikini Kill issued their first recording, Revolution Girl Style Now, an independently distributed demo cassette. For their first official release, the quartet signed with the aggressively independent Olympia-based label Kill Rock Stars; the Bikini Kill EP, produced by Fugazi's Ian Mackaye, consisted largely of reworked versions of material from the first cassette. In 1992, the band issued Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, a split 12" released with the British group Huggy Bear's Our Troubled Youth on its flip side; a subsequent U.K. tour with Huggy Bear in early 1993 raised the visibility of the riot grrrl groundswell to unprecedented heights, and the movement became the focus of many media outlets on both sides of the Atlantic. When Bikini Kill returned to the U.S., they joined forces with Joan Jett, whom the band held up as an early paragon of riot grrrl aesthetics. Jett produced the group's next single, the bracing "New Radio"/"Rebel Girl," and Hanna returned the favor by co-writing the song "Spinster" for the Jett album Pure and Simple. In 1994, Bikini Kill released Pussy Whipped; their most potent effort to date, it featured the songwriting emergence of both Vail and Wilcox, a trend continued on 1996's Reject All American. The group quietly disbanded in early 1998, and Vail, Wilcox, and Boredom went on to form the group the Frumpies, while Hanna released a solo project, Julie Ruin, before assembling the band Le Tigre in 1999. Hanna left Le Tigre in 2005, later revealing that she'd been struggling with Lyme disease. In 2010, Hanna had recovered sufficiently to launch a new band, featuring Kathi Wilcox, which they dubbed the Julie Ruin. Liz Phair began her career in the early 1990s by self-releasing audio cassettes under the name Girly Sound, before signing with the independent record label Matador Records. Her 1993 debut studio album Exile in Guyville was released to acclaim; it has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Phair has sold nearly three million records worldwide and had two Grammy nominations. More than two decades after the release of her debut, Phair's influence over female voices in alternative music can still be felt today. Like many a great band, Sleater-Kinney inhabit their time so thoroughly it took an extended hiatus to realize the extent of their legacy. In many respects, they are the defining American indie rock band of the second half of the 1990s, the group that harnessed all the upheaval of the alt-rock explosion of the first part of the decade and channeled it into a vigorous mission statement. It was not incidental that Sleater-Kinney were an all-female band -- prior to S-K, co-leaders Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein both started playing music in Northern Pacific riot grrrl bands, and their feminism and queercore roots were deeply embedded in their rock & roll -- but calling them the best female rock band of their generation is too confining. By every measure, Sleater-Kinney were one of the best bands of their time, capturing the tenor of their era and then expanding at a rapid clip, delivering record after record that redefined their music without abandoning their punk rock (or political) ideals. Their hot streak began once drummer Janet Weiss joined for 1997's Dig Me Out and it ran until 2005's The Woods, after which they entered an "indefinite hiatus" that lasted nearly a decade. During those ten years of silence, Tucker pursued a solo career, Weiss drummed with ex-Pavement leader Stephen Malkmus' new millennial band the Jicks, and, most surprisingly, Brownstein turned into a mainstream star due to her starring role on Portlandia, the comedy sketch show she created with fellow indie rock refugee Fred Armisen in 2011. Portlandia helped push Brownstein and Sleater-Kinney into a mainstream they had never known, so when they returned in 2015 with No Cities to Love, it was welcomed by their largest audience yet. That album turned out to be as much a conclusion as a comeback. Janet Weiss left the band just prior to the 2019 release of the St. Vincent-produced The Center Won't Hold, an album that brought Tucker and Brownstein into new, adventurous territory they continued to explore on 2021's self-produced Path of Wellness and 2024's Little Rope. Such a large audience was unthinkable back in 1992, when Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein first met. Tucker was then half of Heavens to Betsy, and Brownstein played in Excuse 17. The pair formed a strong bond, one that was for a time romantic, but more notably led to the formation of Sleater-Kinney in 1994. Named after an Interstate 5 intersection in Lacey, Washington, the band was initially planned as a side project, but the recording of their debut album in an all-night session in Melbourne, Australia, with drummer Lora MacFarlane in early 1994 turned the group into a full-time endeavor. A year after its recording, Sleater-Kinney saw release on Chainsaw, a label run by Team Dresch bassist Donna Dresch. The debut gained acclaim, but its speedily released 1996 sequel, Call the Doctor, is where the group gained momentum. Aided by rave reviews, the record spread like wildfire throughout the American underground and placed at number three on the Village Voice's yearly Pazz & Jop critics poll. By that point, former Quasi drummer Janet Weiss had replaced Lora MacFarlane, and the band signed to Kill Rock Stars, which released Dig Me Out in the spring of 1997. The album followed a similar trajectory, earning great reviews, and the group was slowly adopted by a wider audience. With Weiss aboard, Sleater-Kinney began to make rapid musical advances, something that was quite evident by 1999's The Hot Rock. Simultaneously darker and less raw than its predecessor, it was no less visceral, and it heralded a streak of successively more ambitious albums. All Hands on the Bad One arrived quickly, appearing in the spring of 2000, and it showed an increasing facility with pop and musical complexity. The band didn't abandon this layered musicality when they went deliberately political on 2002's One Beat, a record partially written in response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Sleater-Kinney's exposure increased once they accepted an opening slot for Pearl Jam in 2003. After nearly eight years, Sleater-Kinney departed Kill Rock Stars for Sub Pop in 2005. This wasn't the only departure that year. They teamed with Dave Fridmann, the former Mercury Rev member who gained fame as the producer of the Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin, to create the dense, thorny The Woods, their heaviest record and most sonically ambitious. During the record's supporting tour, the group members announced they'd be going on an "indefinite hiatus" upon the completion of their scheduled dates. Weiss was the quickest of the trio to resurface after the disbandment, popping up in Stephen Malkmus' post-Pavement group the Jicks in 2007. Corin Tucker was next, launching the Corin Tucker Band in 2010. The following year, Carrie Brownstein unexpectedly teamed with Saturday Night Live veteran Fred Armisen in 2011 for the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia. This television show, more than any of the recordings in the Sleater-Kinney universe, helped push the band toward the mainstream, as the series became a cult sensation. After its second season, Brownstein re-teamed with Weiss in Wild Flag, a pseudo-supergroup that also featured Mary Timony of Helium. Around the time of Wild Flag's release, the pair and Tucker started to play together as Sleater-Kinney once again. A few dates in 2013 were followed by two years of writing and rehearsal. It was an open secret: they didn't publicize the reunion nor did they deny it, so when the first evidence of it surfaced via a 7" of "Bury Our Friends" included as part of the limited-edition career-encompassing box set Start Together, it came as a genuine surprise. Soon, Sleater-Kinney announced the reunion and a full-length called No Cities to Love that would appear in January 2015, followed by a supporting tour. A souvenir from that tour, Live in Paris, was released in January 2017. Sleater-Kinney returned in May 2019 with "Hurry on Home," the first single from The Center Won't Hold, the group's ninth album. Produced by St. Vincent, the record appeared on Mom + Pop in August 2019, but the month before its release, Janet Weiss left the group. Brownstein and Tucker continued with the release of the album and its supporting tour. Once again a duo, Sleater-Kinney returned in 2021 with the self-produced Path of Wellness, a record that found Brownstein and Tucker continuing down the path opened up by The Center Won't Hold. The next year, Sleater-Kinney celebrated the 25th anniversary of Dig Me Out with the October release of Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album, a tribute record where a variety of musicians interpreted every song from the 1997 landmark. As Green-House, musicians Olive Ardizoni and Michael Flanagan engage human nature and the natural world through joyous, dynamic synthesis. Overlaying frequencies and expressions like camouflage, their deeply layered collaborative process begins with either artist; Ardizoni is often drawn to melody, Flanagan to harmonics. The power lies in how their ideas helix together, achieving a depth greater than the sum of its parts. For their first LP with new label home, Ghostly International, Green-House grows and refines their vivid instrumental songcraft with uncharted, genre-defying freedom and movement, a more active, percussive, and emotion-filled energy, marked by flowing bodies of sound and sweeping vistas. Hinterlands tunes into the beauty of the world with defiant, radical sincerity. Since 2020, across a catalog of acclaimed releases via the scene-creating Los Angeles imprint, Leaving Records, the duo has pursued a curiosity in environments, reaching for innate and faraway spaces by way of organic and synthetic instrumentation, high-definition sound design, and “idiosyncratic melodies crafted with the patient and methodical hand of a gardener,” writes Pitchfork. Green-House doesn’t fit neatly into any single category. Ardizoni and Flanagan aren’t aligned with New Age ideologies or spirituality, and the ambient tag feels increasingly limited given all that’s going on in their songs, which skew closer to the realms of IDM or even modern classical on their new album. What remains inherent is an open sense of wonder, “the idea of legitimizing certain emotions within music that often aren’t taken seriously in art, like happiness and joy,” says Ardizoni, whose eclectic personality shines through even without lyrics. They welcome influences from all over; moments on Hinterlands evoke hypnagogic folk, tropical synth-pop, pan-flute mountain music, jazzy lounge, film scores, library sounds, and other forms of paradise-world-building. The duo simply makes the music they want to hear, earnestly dreaming of idyllic settings, their hope borne of necessity. Like any artist living in Los Angeles, the 2025 wildfires disrupted any semblance of normalcy in creative life. However, they give careful consideration to how ever-looming environmental and political anxiety may relate to the project. “There's freedom in music, not requiring nuance in order to share an emotion or a fantasy or a utopian ideal with others,” Ardizoni says. “I'm an anarchist and an artist. I don't have to explain that. I can just put the emotion in and hope that it can be used as a tool, to be comforting or inspiring for people.” As their third LP, Hinterlands is notably fuller, bigger-feeling than past work; brimming with kaleidoscopic guitar lines, bubbling synth textures, and an orchestral radiance that often registers as more than just two people. They bring up biomimicry — learning from and adapting alongside nature — as a formative notion. “When we’re talking about mimicry, it is also like projecting yourself as being larger in a certain way, in a sonic sense, sounding like a full band, but also as people, interconnected with a broader world,” says Flanagan. “This record is us letting go a little bit as well, giving ourselves the freedom to just write and see what happens, to let the music grow naturally.” Ardizoni adds, “We try to utilize what’s right in front of us, just being in an urban environment and making do with what's there in order to continue to foster that connection we have to the natural world.” Ardizoni and Scott Tenefrancia shot the images that appear within the droplets of the LP’s artwork on a trip to Yosemite and the Inyo National Forest; Flanagan later magnified the scenes through the water with macro photography, using the droplets as a series of lenses. The striking visual serves as a fitting metaphor for music that straddles the organic and the digital — a collection of auditory microcosms developed through imaginative fusion. It begins in the languid heat of “Sun Dogs”, which nods to the coastal sway of Haruomi Hosono's Pacific album and Paradise View soundtrack with washes of keys, horns, and strings. “Sanibel” is pure shoreline bliss, named after the Florida island a young Ardizoni would visit, growing up on the nearby Cape Coral Island (“my first real experiences as a human exploring nature”). “Farewell, Little Island” borrows its title from the 1987 short animated film directed by Sándor Reisenbüchler, which depicts the drowning of a village by modern technology. The track’s buoyant, spiraling guitar samples, their first time exploring the effect, reminded them of the film’s paper-cut animation and of how the story balances serene splendor with tragedy. “Dragline Silk” conjures a curious trip. Built on a bed of ascending synth and guitar chords bathed in spring reverb (stemming from their shared love for Jessica Pratt’s latest album) and named after the natural phenomenon of spiders that use static electricity to sail through the atmosphere, the track soars with grandeur. The Hinterland suite is the album’s centerpiece, three tracks traversing wide hilltop terrain, with flute and guitar playfully surveying the scene (“Hinterland I”) before more contemplative strums and astral synth and woodwinds take hold (“Hinterland II” and “III”). Hinterlands’ sequencing takes the listener from sea to mountains to somewhere more abstract and fantastical; late highlight “Under the Oak” possesses an otherworldly calm on warbled keys, followed by “Bronze Age”, even more subdued. “Valley of Blue” ends the movement in melancholy, overlooking a blue flower field with swells of synthetic strings and oboe in the style of Final Fantasy (Ardizoni originally called it “Memory of a Chocobo”). These traces of sadness permeate the otherwise effervescent collection, reminders that, behind the wonder, lies often profound worry (after all, Sanibel Island was nearly wiped out in 2022). Green-House makes sense of these feelings through their art, with genuine tenderness and refreshing conviction.

Known for detailed wordplay imbued with filth and humor, Action Bronson draws influence from the likes of fellow Queens native Kool G Rap and Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah, and calls upon his past life as a chef to spit major culinary knowledge. The rapper emerged from the underground in the early 2010s and crashed the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 with Mr. Wonderful (2015), his major-label debut, featuring the gold-certified Chance the Rapper collaboration "Baby Blue." He has since expanded his reach as a television personality, author, and actor, and has juggled this work with continued artistic growth displayed on full-lengths such as Blue Chips 7000 (2017) and the Loma Vista-issued efforts Only for Dolphins (2020) and Cocodrillo Turbo (2022). He self-issued Johann Sebastian Bachlava the Doctor in 2024. A New York City native from Queens' Flushing neighborhood, Bronson, born Ariyan Arslani, developed his first area of expertise in his family's restaurant. After studying at the Art Institute of New York City's culinary program, he filled multiple roles in the restaurant industry. Serious effort wasn't put into rapping -- which he had started on a lark -- until a broken leg precluded kitchen work. Bronson's first major showcase arrived in the form of a 2007 mixtape as a member the Outdoorsmen, which was trailed by several guest verses and a solo single. His career truly achieved flight in 2011, a year in which he released his debut mixtape, as well as his first two proper albums, Dr. Lecter and Well-Done, the latter co-billed to producer Statik Selektah. After Bronson issued mixtapes recorded with Party Supplies and the Alchemist, the rapper made his major-label debut on Atlantic (via Vice) in 2013 with Saaab Stories, a Harry Fraud-produced EP. Given an extra boost by appearances from Prodigy and Raekwon, two of Bronson's key '90s hardcore inspirations, the EP peaked at number six on Billboard's rap chart. Another collaborative tape with Party Supplies was out by the end of that year. Bronson continued to stockpile guest verses on the way to third album Mr. Wonderful. The success of pre-release single "Baby Blue," featuring Chance the Rapper, helped take the full-length to number two on the rap chart and number seven on the Billboard 200. In 2016, Bronson took his food-and-travel web series, Fuck, That's Delicious, to cable television, and only a few months later launched a second series for the Viceland channel, Traveling the Stars: Action Bronson and Friends Watch Ancient Aliens. The Traveling the Stars theme "Descendant of the Stars," "Durag vs. Headband," and the Suicide Squad: The Album inclusion "Standing in the Rain" also reached the public during 2016. Another album for Atlantic, Blue Chips 7000, and a book, Fuck, That's Delicious: An Annotated Guide to Eating Well, arrived in 2017. He also starred in a cooking show of the same name. The following year, Bronson self-released his fourth album, White Bronco, which featured the Daringer-produced title track and a handful of Knxwledge collaborations highlighted by "Prince Charming." Although Bronson continued to diversify through the end of the 2010s and into the 2020s -- he appeared in the films The Irishman and The King of Staten Island, for instance -- it didn't slow his musical output. Teamed again with frequent collaborator the Alchemist, he returned near the end of 2019 with the Lamb Over Rice EP, and at the start of 2020 added key inspiration Kool G Rap to the list of artists who have received one of his guest verses (heard on "A Queen's Thing"). Bronson's next album, Only for Dolphins, arrived in 2020 with the rapper's typically brash rhymes outfitted with wide-ranging productions referencing Latin soul, reggae, and even mid-'80s Russian fusion. 2022's Cocodrillo Turbo featured similarly trippy production, as well as guest appearances by Conway the Machine, Roc Marciano, Meyhem Lauren, and others. Bound to no single sound while exploring many, Jane Remover makes hyperpop that can be frenetic and damaged or beautifully lush depending on their mood. After producing an array of releases in multiple styles and under many different aliases, the vocalist/producer/songwriter broke through to a new level of acclaim with their 2021 debut full-length, Frailty. Fronted by their main songwriter, Elizabeth Stokes, New Zealand indie rock group the Beths combine energized guitar riffs, melodic hooks, and harmonized backing vocals in their impulsive, distinctly self-deprecating music. Having already won fans as a live act, the band released their first album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. Their 2021 live album Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 featured earworms from the debut and follow-up Jump Rope Gazers. The Beths completed their third long-player, 2022's anxious Expert in a Dying Field, in a Los Angeles studio while on tour. It reached number one on the New Zealand album charts. Stokes (vocals, guitar) went to high school with Jonathan Pearce (guitar), and they later met Benjamin Sinclair (bass) and Ivan Luketina-Johnston (drums) while all four were studying jazz at the University of Auckland. The Beths materialized when the friends were playing together and began revisiting the punk-pop of their youth. They liked the results and made their recording debut in 2016 with the Pearce-produced Warm Blood EP. The Beths quickly built a reputation across Australia and New Zealand for their lively shows. Carpark Records took note and reissued Warm Blood to an international audience in 2018, the same year they released the Beths' full-length debut, Future Me Hates Me. Maintaining the grungy edge and infectiousness of their earliest songs, it was also produced by Pearce. Arin Ray is a progressive R&B artist known for his yearning tenor and insightful songwriting. The Cincinnati-raised, Los Angeles based singer came to nationwide attention as a competitor on The X Factor in the early 2010s. Although he found himself back at square one following that exposure, he established himself as a writer for names like Jason Derulo and K. Michelle, then signed a solo contract with Interscope, eventually releasing the albums Platinum Fire (2018) and Hello Poison (2022) through the major label. After the third volume in his Phases series of EPs (2023), Ray went independent, issuing "Both of Us" in 2026. During the first season of The X Factor in 2011, the Cincinnati native was eliminated as a member of the bootcamp-stage group Intensity. He returned on his own in 2012 for the second season, mentored by Britney Spears, and finished tenth. Ray relocated to Los Angeles in 2013, the year he self-released the single "Turn It Up," and within a couple years had co-written songs for Jason Derulo ("Love Like That") and Chris Brown ("KAE"). Ray resumed solo work with the Phases EP in 2016, the same year he was credited with co-writing material for the likes of K. Michelle (the charting single "Ain't You"), Ro James ("Ride"), DJ Mustard ("Another Summer"), and Jahkoy ("Don't Stop the Vibe"). In 2018, Ray made his major-label debut on Interscope with Platinum Fire. The album was driven by collaborations with DRAM and Ty Dolla $ign, featured respectively on "Communication" and "Take," and contained additional guest appearances from the likes of Terrace Martin, Nez & Rio, and Childish Major. A deluxe version of Platinum Fire followed later that year and added three more songs including "Always" featuring Babyface. Just before the end of the decade, Ray came back Phases II, led by "Changes," a duet with Kehlani. It would be over two years before Ray returned with new material in the form of seductive single "The Mood" featuring D Smoke. It arrived on Interscope in April 2022, just two months before it showed up on Ray's second long-player, Hello Poison. Blxst assisted on the standout slow jam "Bad Idea," while VanJess and Ari Lennox, along with a few returning collaborators, also contributed to the set. Ray delivered Phases III in October 2023. Longer and less collaborative than the previous Phases EPs, the 11-track release was highlighted by a couple of Ray's sleekest ballads, "Moonlight" and "Wait So Long." Ray was featured on tracks by Terrace Martin ("Solo") and Lily Massie ("Believe"), then issued his first post-Interscope single, "Both of Us," in 2026. - Biography by Andy Kellman

L’Rain is the musical project of multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and curator Taja Cheek. Operating between the worlds of art and music, and outwards into film, fashion and cultural discourse, Cheek is forging a unique path that transcends disciplines to become one of the most vital and adventurous voices for this warped contemporary moment. Currently the artistic director of Performance Space NY and readying the release of L’Rain’s fourth album, fata morgana, Cheek’s creative impact resonates through her uncompromising commitment to community-building, navigating structural inequality while challenging musical conventions and expectations at every turn. L’Rain is its thrilling manifestation. Raised in Brooklyn and rooted in the city’s vibrant noise community, Cheek’s world was defined by a tension of contrasts from the off — classically trained yet steeped in DIY iconoclasm, drawn to lush orchestrations and gritty tape loops alike, finding cracks in established forms, taking risks and letting the light pour through. Fascinated by the schisms, feedbacks and distortions that emerge between identity and society at large, Cheek worked closely with collaborators Ben Chapoteau-Katz and Andrew Lappin to hone a sound for L’Rain that is intense, playful, seductive and deeply personal, deconstructing pop tropes with impressionistic flair and subverting the very notion of experimental music within the Black American tradition. Where the “psychic collage” of self-titled 2017 debut revelled in the collisions of hi- and lo-fi technology, it was 2021’s Fatigue that propelled L’Rain to a wider audience. Gaining critical acclaim from NPR, album of the year in The Wire and #2 in Pitchfork's best albums of 2021, it set the foundations for 2023 album I Killed Your Dog, which skewed towards ‘90s RnB influences — a bold, bratty, diabolical anti-break-up record that untangled Cheek’s relationship with femininity and the formal musical conventions that others imposed on her. fata morgana is the daring and ambitious high point of this quadrilogy of L’Rain releases. A heady synthesis of sonic influences, from digi-dub, dream pop and gospel slow jams to tape meditations and crunched thrash metal, it is an album that effervesces in the messiness of life, interrogating power relations while reckoning with self-doubt, self-love and the mirages of belonging and alienation that shape Cheek’s lived experience of the United States today. This capacity to articulate emotional nuance within a wider societal critique has defined Cheek’s curatorial work with major institutions like Creative Time, the High Line, and MoMA PS1, where she reframed the music programme over several years. Challenging the systemic barriers to representation in the arts, Cheek’s accessible and community-centred approach defined her success as guest curator of the 2024 Whitney Biennial and extends to her current role at Performance Space NY, whose programming has shaped cultural, theoretical and political discourse over four decades. In May 2026, L’Rain recorded an ambitious live album and concert film with the full band at Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis. It is the latest iteration of a creative sensibility that seeks out liminal realms across mediums, whether working on specific projects (like recent single with Tasha and Jamila Woods) or broad-scope visions, world-building for change within an industry resistant to new forms. Singer, songwriter, cellist, and producer Kelsey Lu constructs their dreamy, off-balance alternative music with a mix of classical chamber, folk, and electronic components, topping off intricate arrangements with soulful vocals. They released their first EP, the spare Church, in 2016 before expanding their palette with layered electronics and instruments including strings, guitars, and multi-tracked vocals. Their studio debut, Blood, appeared in 2019. Following collaborations with artists spanning Florence + the Machine, Yves Tumor, and Blood Orange, and divergences into film scoring, Lu returned with the Jack Antonoff- and Yves Rothman-produced So Help Me God in 2026. A classically trained cellist from Charlotte, North Carolina, Kelsey Elizabeth McJunkins enrolled at the North Carolina School of the Arts as an 18-year-old before relocating to New York City. They had contributed cello and/or vocals to recordings by Lady Gaga, Solange, and Blood Orange, among others, by the end of 2016, the year they made their label debut with the Church EP. Recorded live in a church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, with their cello and a loop pedal, it was produced by Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift) and issued by True Panther Sounds. Lu performed cello on albums by Father John Misty and Kelela in 2017 before returning with a more complex, layered sound in 2018 on singles such as "Shades of Blue" and "Due West," which were among their first releases for Columbia Records. That year, they also collaborated with Sampha on a cover of Joni Mitchell's "River." In the meantime, they relocated to Los Angeles and appeared on 2018 LPs by Florence + the Machine, Oneohtrix Point Never, and again, Blood Orange. They started 2019 with an appropriately dreamy cover of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love," which appeared on their full-length debut, Blood. Months later, they issued a remix set titled Blood Transfusion. Into the 2020s, Lu teamed with Yves Tumor for "let all the poisons that lurk in the mud seep out," appeared on Onyx Collective's "Where or When," and collaborated with Boys Noize on "Ride or Die," as well as contributing to albums by prior collaborators, Neneh Cherry, Jamie xx, and others. A detour into film music resulted in their scores for the BAFTA-winning 2023 drama Earth Mama and the Peabody Award-winning 2024 documentary Daughters. Lu was back with a bang in March 2026 with the skittery, dance-oriented electro-acoustic track "Running Pain," the lead single from their sophomore LP, that June's So Help Me God, their debut for the Dirty Hit label.
