The observant, poetic, and down-to-earth Noname exhibits inspirations including Lauryn Hill and André 3000, but the rapper is in a lane of her own with unflappable and conversational verses offering everything from intense self-reflection and offhanded put-downs to strong Black affirmation and considered anti-capitalist thought. These qualities shade her independent full-length projects Telefone (2016), Room 25 (2018), and Sundial (2023). Two years after the release of the latter, Noname returned with "Hundred Acres," a casually celebratory track featuring a hook from Devin Morrison. The single was billed as a preview of her fourth project, Cartoon Radio. Born Fatimah Warner in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, Noname frequented open-mike nights and slam poetry competitions when she wasn't volunteering with the local YOUMedia arts program. Her audience began to widen in 2013, the year she appeared on Mick Jenkins' Trees & Truths and Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap. After she guested on Jenkins' The Waters, Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment's Surf, Chance the Rapper's Coloring Book, and Jamila Woods' HEAVN, among other releases, she made her proper debut in July 2016 with the self-issued Telefone. Three years in the making, its reflective coming-of-age tales featured productions from a strictly Chicagoan cast of Cam O'bi, Phoelix, Saba, and Monte Booker. The mixtape landed in year-end lists from numerous publications, and Coloring Book shortly thereafter won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, consequently increasing anticipation for Noname's follow-up project. Recorded during a monthlong period following touring and a move to Los Angeles, the comparatively expansive Room 25 -- with Phoelix the lone production collaborator -- arrived in September 2018 to a similarly warm reception. Nearly five years would pass before Noname's third full-length. The rapper thought about quitting music due to frustrations and other pursuits such as a book club. She went on hiatus, though in 2020 she did release the Madlib-produced "Song 33," a response to criticism from J. Cole, and vowed to direct her earnings from the track to Black mutual aid funds. In August 2023, she returned with Sundial, her third full-length. The deeply thoughtful and questioning set featured collaborations with Common, Billy Woods, Jay Electronica, and Jimetta Rose with the Voices of Creation. Mannequin Pussy’s music feels like a resilient and galvanizing shout that demands to be heard. Across four albums, the Philadelphia rock band that consists of Colins “Bear” Regisford (bass, vocals), Kaleen Reading (drums, percussion), Maxine Steen (guitar, synths), and Marisa Dabice (guitar, vocals) has made cathartic tunes about despairing times. “There's just so much constantly going on that feels intentionally evil that trying to make something beautiful feels like a radical act ,” says Dabice. “The ethos of this band has always been to bring people together.” Their latest I Got Heaven, which is out March 1 via Epitaph Records, is the band’s most fully realized LP yet. Over 10 ambitious tracks which abruptly turn from searing punk to inviting pop, the album is deeply concerned with desire, the power in being alone, and how to live in an unfeeling and unkind world. It’s a document of a band doubling down on their unshakable bond to make something furious, thrilling, and wholly alive. Following the 2019 release of their critically acclaimed third album Patience, Mannequin Pussy returned in 2021 for their EP Perfect. They toured that release relentlessly and added guitarist Maxine Steen to the band’s official lineup. Where the band members’ personal lives were in transition with breakups, changing living situations, and periods of self-reevaluation, their time together on the road was a grounding and clarifying force. “There was so much going on in our lives that it was the perfect opportunity to recalibrate who we were as people and musicians,” says Regisford. The band changed their entire formula, choosing to write together in Los Angeles with producer John Congleton over slowly crafting tracks at home. “When I've written songs, it's usually a very solitary process,” says Dabice. “So this was shedding a lot of those hermit-like qualities to do something intensively collaborative. Your best work comes when you allow other people into it.” By December 2022, the band had 17 new songs written with Congleton in Los Angeles. “Everyone felt empowered to speak up about their own ideas to make this thing the best it could possibly be,” says Regisford. New member Maxine Steen, who has made music with Dabice for years including their side project Rosie Thorne, was especially essential to the writing sessions. The album opener “I Got Heaven” initially started as one of Steen’s demos. “When she showed it to me I knew it was going to be fun because the verses have this hard-hitting and aggressive approach but the chorus allows for a really soaring melody,” says Dabice. The result is electric. Over walloping guitar riffs, Dabice defiantly yells, “And what if I’m an angel? Oh what if I’m a bore? And what if I was confident would you just hate me more? The song with its righteous lyrical blending of the sacred and profane is an unapologetic look at Christian hypocrisy. “I don't think there's ever been anything in need of a spiritual revolution more than modern-day Christianity,” says Dabice. “It sickens me the way that people use it as a way to do the worst things imaginable, say the worst things imaginable, and pass the worst imaginable legislation that directly harms people.” Instead of judgment, greed, and avarice, the songs on I Got Heaven ask what it really means to genuinely care about the people around you and help your communities in ways you can. “The world that we live in is heaven,” says Dabice. “We live on the most beautiful planet in the solar system, just by a chance and we are continuingly destroying it.” This sentiment is mirrored by the album’s cover art: a figure and a pig in nature. There’s an intentional ambiguity there that makes you wonder if this person is leading the animal to slaughter or its protector. “We should really be the shepherds and the protectors of everything that we have and the world we live in,” says Dabice. I Got Heaven is an album that understands the stakes of its message: there are countless references to fire, hunger, and holiness. Here, teeth gnash and bodies are temples that ache with desire. On the yearning single “Nothing Like,” which is anchored by a dancey, shuffling drum beat from Reading, Dabice’s voice eventually morphs from a coo to a roar as she sings, “Oh what’s wrong with dreaming of burning this all down?” Even when the songs on I Got Heaven don’t deal with fundamental human questions about how to live, Mannequin Pussy still finds ways to add urgency and resonance. Just take the buoyant and playful single “I Don’t Know You,” which slowly builds to a hair-raising peak with Reading’s brushed percussion, Steen’s enveloping synths, and a thoughtful groove from Regisford. “On that song, I changed the tuning last minute which transformed the song but everyone instinctively knew what to do,” says Dabice. “It was really cool to watch a song come alive in real-time. It's such a gift to meet other people who are creatively on the same wavelength as you, where there's no judgment in sharing ideas.” The lightness of this track pairs perfectly with the rest of the tracklist, even when it’s snarling rock like “Loud Bark” or punishing hardcore punk with Regisford sharing lead vocal duties on “OK? OK! OK? OK!” “If you're a Mannequin Pussy fan, you know that we're going to have some rippers,” says Regisford. “We're gonna have something that's going to be in your face. But we're also going to give you something that's going to be light to the touch with its own version of aggression.” The loud and uncompromising single “Of Her,” finds Dabice screaming, “I was born / Of her fire / Of sacrifices That were made / So I could make it.” It’s a song about living life without regrets and understanding the sacrifices that you and your parents, especially your mother, made to allow you to live the life you want. I Got Heaven is a visceral and stunning album for people who aren’t content with the status quo, made by people who challenged themselves and got out of their comfort zone. ”We're supposed to be living in the freest era ever so what it means to be a young person in this society is the freedom to challenge these systems that have been put on to us,” says Dabice. “It makes sense to ask, what ultimately am I living for? What is it that makes me want to live?”

The swaggering pop-rap of Qveen Herby emerged following a hiatus for hip-hop-inspired dance-pop duo Karmin. The alter ego of vocalist Amy Noonan, Qveen Herby explored more-hardcore rap and hip-hop influences starting with 2017's EP 1, the first in a numeric series. Amy Noonan (born Heidemann) and her husband, producer/trombonist Nick Noonan, both Berklee College of Music grads, became Internet sensations in the early 2010s as Karmin. While their exuberant covers of artists like Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne were their first tracks to earn them a significant following, they were invited to perform original material on Saturday Night Live in early 2012. Their Epic debut, the seven-track Hello, saw release that May. The Billboard 200-charting full-length Pulses followed in 2014 before the independently released Leo Rising arrived in 2016. The latter reached the Top 30 of Billboard's Independent Albums chart. Moving away from the poppier style they had developed with Karmin, Qveen Herby embraced more hardcore rap influences on a series of numbered EPs beginning with June 2017's EP 1. As G Flip, Melbourne's Georgia Flipo makes emotive, anthemic synth pop. After gaining attention with their 2018 debut single, "About You," they polished their sound on the following year's full-length About Us, an ARIA-nominated Top Ten hit in their native Australia. The drums-forward DRUMMER arrived in 2023 and was followed in 2025 by the '80s pop/rock-inspired Dream Ride. Flipo grew up in a music-loving family: their father introduced them to the Clash and Green Day, while their mother passed on her affection for pop and R&B. Flipo began playing drums at age nine, when their uncle gave them a kit as a present. A few years later, they learned piano and guitar and played with bands ranging from metal to reggae acts. They idolized their high school drum teacher, Jenny Rose Morrish, whose support and instruction helped Flipo get into Box Hill Institute, where they majored in drums and earned a Bachelor of Music. When Morrish died from cancer at age 31 in 2015, Flipo made it their goal to fulfill their teacher's dream of touring America. They became the drummer and backing vocalist for the band EMPRA and eventually toured the States with them. When EMPRA disbanded in late 2016, Flipo dedicated themself to making their own music. They spent much of 2017 working on their production and vocal skills with online tutorials. They also built an audiovisual screen for their kickdrum head that they named the Je Re Mo in honor of Morrish. When they weren't working on their music, Flipo gave drum and guitar lessons to schoolchildren in their studio space. Early in 2018, G Flip signed with the Future Classic label; that February, they released their debut single, "About You." The track earned widespread acclaim as well as chart and streaming success, and Flipo made their live debut a few months later at SXSW. To make their debut album, they collaborated with Scissor Sisters' Scott "Babydaddy" Hoffman, Melbourne-based producer/songwriter Joel Quartermain, and producer Ariel Rechtshaid. The ARIA-nominated About Us -- which was inspired by the on-again, off-again relationship Flipo was in during G Flip's early days -- appeared in August 2019 and featured the Australian Top Ten single "Drink Too Much." Billie Marten has a delicate, lyrical indie folk style. Her craft matured when she was young, and she made an impression with her first viral music video as a preteen. Her debut full-length album, Writing of Blues & Yellows, drew comparisons to the sound of such influential singer/songwriters as Kate Bush and Nick Drake when it arrived in 2016. She continued to refine and transform her plaintive folk-pop on subsequent efforts Feeding Seahorses by Hand (2019), Flora Fauna (2021), Drop Cherries (2023), and Dog Eared (2025). An English singer/songwriter based out of North Yorkshire, Isabella Sophie Tweddle, better known by her stage name Billie Marten, first caught the public's attention in 2011 (at the age of 12) with a YouTube performance that garnered the budding musician over 100,000 views. By 2014, she had released her first EP and began earning favorable comparisons to fellow English folkies like Laura Marling and Lucy Rose. The following year saw Marten ink a deal with Chess Club Records and release a second EP, and in November of that year, she was nominated for the prestigious BBC Sound of 2016 on the strength of the singles "Bird" and "Heavy Weather." Her debut full-length, Writing of Blues & Yellows, followed in September of that year. The record received widespread acclaim, with Marten commended for her ability to craft intricate, woeful, and ethereal songs. Still exhibiting those traits, she returned in 2018 with the singles "Mice" and "Blue Sea, Red Sea," the first results of her sophomore album. Marten had recorded the album to four-track with producer Ethan John at his home in Bath, U.K., with the release, Feeding Seahorses by Hand, issued in mid-2019. The effort was preceded by two more singles, "Cartoon People" and "Betsy." 2021's Flora Fauna saw Marten add elements of pop and Krautrock to her expansive sound while continuing to look inward lyrically. The four-song Acoustic EP arrived later that November. In early 2023, Marten announced the arrival of her fourth long-player with the release of the lead single, "This Is How We Move." Written and co-produced by Marten with Dom Monks in Somerset and Wales, Drop Cherries was released later that April. In 2025, Marten unveiled her fifth long-player, Dog Eared. As Fink, British singer and musician Fin Greenall explores intimate songwriting in solo acoustic, band, and electronic settings. A longtime staple of the Ninja Tune family, he started out making breakbeat-driven music, starting with the experimental drum'n'bass EP Fink Funk (1997) and the downtempo trip-hop album Fresh Produce (2000). He switched Fink into a more soulful, acoustic-based project with 2006's Biscuits for Breakfast, and his introspective songwriting found him collaborating with the likes of John Legend, Amy Winehouse, and other talented songsmiths. Fink's style developed on strong, emotionally dynamic records like 2014's Hard Believer, which featured his most recognizable hit, "Looking Too Closely." The raw, blues-based Sunday Night Blues Club, Vol. 1 appeared in 2017, and Fink continued issuing studio albums like Bloom Innocent (2019) and Beauty in Your Wake (2024), as well as live, acoustic, and reimagined versions of previously released material. Born in Cornwall but raised in Bristol, Greenall made his first steps in music by recording an ambient/downtempo album with Lee Jones (aka Hefner) that was eventually released under the name EVA by Kickin' Records in 1995. Billing himself as Fink, Greenall signed to Ninja Tune's Ntone imprint and released a pair of EPs, 1997's jungle-influenced Fink Funk and 1998's significantly more relaxed Front Side, Blunt Side. These preceded Fink's 2000 debut full-length, Fresh Produce, which continued the chilled-out trip-hop direction of Front Side. Greenall released electronic music as Sideshow, picking up the tempo a bit and leaning toward deep, dubby minimal techno. He released two Sideshow EPs on Will Saul's Simple Records before Saul and Greenall started the highly successful Aus Music label in 2006. By this point, his work as Fink had undertaken a stylistic change, largely abandoning electronics and focusing on acoustic-based blues and folk songwriting. He had also begun working with other songwriters as a producer and collaborator, writing demos with Amy Winehouse, and contributing vocals to a track by British singer/songwriter Nitin Sawhney. With the addition of Tim Thornton on drums and Guy Whittaker on bass, Fink became a band, fully transitioning into Greenall's new style of lowly lit indie songwriting with the release of Biscuits for Breakfast on Ninja Tune in 2006. Distance and Time followed in 2007, with production work from Lamb's Andy Barlow. The album included the single "This Is the Thing," which was featured in the film Dear John. In 2009, Fink released Sort of Revolution, which furthered and refined his songwriting and featured a collaboration with John Legend on "Maker." Perfect Darkness, from 2011, was produced by Billy Bush (Beck, Garbage) and garnered enough attention for Fink to be invited to perform with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. This concert was subsequently released as a live album in late 2013, and the studio album Hard Believer was released in July 2014, courtesy of Fink's Ninja Tune sublabel R'COUP'D. A collection of dubs from Horizontalism was released in May of 2015. Two Fink full-lengths appeared in 2017: the roughly hewn live Sunday Night Blues Club, Vol. 1 and the more refined Resurgam. In 2019, Greenall embarked on a solo acoustic tour and began releasing new singles ("We Watch the Stars" and "Bloom Innocent") in anticipation of an upcoming album. That album, also titled Bloom Innocent, appeared later in the year. 2021, the 15th anniversary of Biscuits for Breakfast, brought IIUII ("It Isn't Until It Is"), a re-recordings album on which the band reimagined and reshaped 12 of their best-loved songs from across the breadth of their career. Fink's version of Neu!'s "Weissensee" was released in 2022, as part of the German band's 50 box set. The limited edition release The LowSwing Sessions (2024) included acoustic covers of songs by Soundgarden, David Bowie, the Smiths, and others. The observant, poetic, and down-to-earth Noname exhibits inspirations including Lauryn Hill and André 3000, but the rapper is in a lane of her own with unflappable and conversational verses offering everything from intense self-reflection and offhanded put-downs to strong Black affirmation and considered anti-capitalist thought. These qualities shade her independent full-length projects Telefone (2016), Room 25 (2018), and Sundial (2023). Two years after the release of the latter, Noname returned with "Hundred Acres," a casually celebratory track featuring a hook from Devin Morrison. The single was billed as a preview of her fourth project, Cartoon Radio. Born Fatimah Warner in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, Noname frequented open-mike nights and slam poetry competitions when she wasn't volunteering with the local YOUMedia arts program. Her audience began to widen in 2013, the year she appeared on Mick Jenkins' Trees & Truths and Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap. After she guested on Jenkins' The Waters, Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment's Surf, Chance the Rapper's Coloring Book, and Jamila Woods' HEAVN, among other releases, she made her proper debut in July 2016 with the self-issued Telefone. Three years in the making, its reflective coming-of-age tales featured productions from a strictly Chicagoan cast of Cam O'bi, Phoelix, Saba, and Monte Booker. The mixtape landed in year-end lists from numerous publications, and Coloring Book shortly thereafter won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, consequently increasing anticipation for Noname's follow-up project. Recorded during a monthlong period following touring and a move to Los Angeles, the comparatively expansive Room 25 -- with Phoelix the lone production collaborator -- arrived in September 2018 to a similarly warm reception. Nearly five years would pass before Noname's third full-length. The rapper thought about quitting music due to frustrations and other pursuits such as a book club. She went on hiatus, though in 2020 she did release the Madlib-produced "Song 33," a response to criticism from J. Cole, and vowed to direct her earnings from the track to Black mutual aid funds. In August 2023, she returned with Sundial, her third full-length. The deeply thoughtful and questioning set featured collaborations with Common, Billy Woods, Jay Electronica, and Jimetta Rose with the Voices of Creation. Shemar Pierre is a New York-based multidisciplinary artist, producer, composer, and visionary designer. Known for fusing electronic music, alternative hip-hop, and experimental sound textures, he crafts a dense and immersive atmosphere, oscillating between raw intensity and fragile emotion. Shemar’s musical journey began with a clear objective: to push sonic boundaries, blend melody and dissonance, and create soundscapes where every synth, every kick drum, every silence matters. Early on, he knew his voice wouldn’t come from conformity, but from a deliberate singularity. With his first five-song album, “ENIGMA.”, Shemar had to test and explore his universe before finding himself. It wasn’t until his next project, “NEXUS :: Discipline,” released on April 10, 2022, that he found a sound he liked and would stick with. From there, Pierre began working in actual studios with various producers, videographers, and photographers from all over the country to help him bring his dream to life, while they did the work they enjoyed. The sandy shores of Asbury Park, New Jersey are hallowed ground in the Northeast; the rolling waves have ushered generations of venerated musicians to worldwide acclaim. The creative force behind Slow Joy, Esteban Flores saw the alternative rock project emerge as his full-time calling after the loss of a steady day job and while mourning the death of his mother. Flores wove a tapestry of influences—grunge, emo, shoegaze, a childhood spent playing nearly every instrument in his local church—and looked for inspiration in alt rock icons like Nirvana and Modest Mouse and also in the shape-shifting rap of Tyler, the Creator. “What if you had this punk, hip-hoppy sound over grungy, old-school rock tunes?” he wondered. The final product is one of 2025’s most compelling debut albums, A Joy So Slow At Times I Don’t Think It’s Coming, on May 16th via Mick Music. Flores’ 2024 EP Mi Amigo Slow Joy earned critical acclaim from outlets like FLOOD and Chicago Reader, plus a “Best New Band” nod from Dallas Observer and a live session for Audiotree. For his debut album, Flores teamed up with producer Mike Sapone (The Front Bottoms, Oso Oso) and recorded mostly at Ghost Hit Recording in Springfield, Massachusetts. Flores co-wrote several tracks with Josh Varnadore, Zach Degaenato, and Jordan Witzigreuter. Their name is a reference to the 1986 filmFerris Bueller's Day Off.The band formed after the dissolution of a number of Southern California bands. With Monique Powell as manager, front person, and co-songwriter, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response.Financed by Powell's sister, the band released their debut EP "Introducing SAVE FERRIS" on Powell's label,Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans. As the Lemon Twigs, sons of power pop songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ronnie D'Addario, Brian and Michael D'Addario channel the '70s singer/songwriter energy of their father's era and add a healthy love of musical theater and an over-the-top performance. The brothers began writing songs at young ages and delivered their 2016 debut album, Do Hollywood, on 4AD at the tail-end of their teenage years. Success came quickly, with critical acclaim and a string of TV appearances as well as extensive touring. They evolved from the conceptual eccentricity of their 2018 sophomore album, Go to School, to a more varied but no less bombastic set of songs on their 2020 album Songs for the General Public, to the emotionally naked sentiments of their more subtle but still wildly eclectic albums like 2023's Everything Harmony and the following year's A Dream Is All We Know. Long Island brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario started the Lemon Twigs while they were still in their teens, each playing multiple instruments, counting guitar, keyboards, drums, horns, and strings among their proficiencies. The boys were raised in a musical home, sons of working musician parents. Along with an interest in theater, early musical influences like Harry Nilsson, Todd Rundgren, Wings, the Zombies, and other '60s and '70s Baroque pop figures played heavily into the band's sound at a formative time. In 2015, their earliest output arrived in the form of the cassette-only album What We Know. Significant buzz had formed around the group even then, and they signed to indie superpower 4AD, releasing their "These Words" b/w "As Long as We're Together" single in 2016 and selling the 7" mostly while on a tour supporting Carseat Headrest. Their debut album, Do Hollywood, arrived later in the year, produced by Foxygen's Jonathan Rado. The Lemon Twigs embarked on a tour in support of the album with a live version of the band that included Danny Ayala on keyboards and Megan Zeankowski on bass. They returned in September 2017 with Brothers of Destruction, a home-recorded EP written largely during the sessions for Do Hollywood featuring a handful of live staples from their touring set. In August of the next year, sophomore album Go to School arrived, a massive production conceptualized as a musical about a chimpanzee raised by human parents. The ambitious Broadway-inspired record included guest appearances by both of the D'Addario brothers' parents as well as power pop legends Todd Rundgren and Jody Stephens. In April 2020, the band returned with The Lemon Twigs LIVE, a fundraiser for Coalition for the Homeless culled from live-to-tape recordings from shows in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and California. It was followed in August by their third studio full-length, the Rado-co-produced Songs for the General Public. It spent a week on Billboard's Top Current Album Sales chart (number 61). The brothers contributed to Tim Heidecker's album Fear of Death, which saw release a month later, and over the next few years also appeared on records by Rundgren and Weyes Blood. The Twigs began work on their next album in 2020 and spent months refining their new material before resurfacing in early 2023 with the self-produced single "Corner of My Eye," the first song shared in advance of their fourth album Everything Harmony. In addition to their long-running love of glam and theatrical power pop, the band looked to the influence of both mainstream and outsider folk artists for their new set of songs, evoking Simon & Garfunkel on some tracks and Moondog on others. Everything Harmony was released in May of 2023 and was the band's first album with new label Captured Tracks. Almost exactly a year later, their next album A Dream Is All We Know was released. An esteemed figure in Texas hip-hop, Paul Wall is known most for his equally affable and boastful rhymes delivered with a thick drawl best suited for the syrupy rhythms he favors. Also a DJ who fell under the spell of the pioneering DJ Screw, Wall came up with Houston's Swishahouse label, recording in tandem with Chamillionaire. Wall made local and regional moves before reaching a larger audience through Mike Jones' "Still Tippin'," a platinum hit that set him up for crossover solo success with The Peoples Champ (2005), a Billboard 200-topping release. Wall kept rolling with a featured role on Nelly's "Grillz" -- a number one pop hit nominated for a Grammy, it was good for Wall's custom mouthpiece business -- and Top Ten follow-up album Get Money, Stay True (2007). After a couple more albums with Swishahouse, Wall went independent and for the most part has stuck with street music tailored for leisurely drives and hedonistic parties. He has likewise remained prolific with a combination of over two dozen subsequent solo albums, duo albums, mixtapes, and EPs. Among Wall's frequent collaborators is Termanology, with whom he made Start 2 Finish (2022) and Start Finish Repeat (2023). Born Paul Slayton, Paul Wall grew up as a hardcore disciple of fellow Houstonian DJ Screw and became so familiar with the pioneering DJ's woozy, slowed-down style of remixing that he had to adjust to hearing hip-hop at any other tempo. Wall started rapping and DJ'ing in the late '90s. Before his nationwide breakthrough, he was involved with promotional street teams, spun records at parties, put together underground mixtapes, and was half of the Color Changin' Click with Chamillionaire. He recorded 2002's Get Ya Mind Correct with Chamillionaire and then followed that with the 2004 solo effort Chick Magnet, his first album. Later in 2004, Mike Jones released a version of "Still Tippin" -- featuring Wall and Slim Thug -- that would reach number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually go platinum. During its ascent, Controversy Sells, another disc billed to Wall and Chamillionaire, hit the streets and set up the September 2005 release of Wall's Atlantic-distributed second album, The Peoples Champ. Appropriately titled, the album went to number one on the Billboard 200 and featured a pair of gold singles with "Sittin' Sideways" and the Top 40 crossover hit "Girl." It was around the same time that Wall was featured on another big single, Nelly's number one pop hit "Grillz," a track also nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Get Money, Stay True, Wall's 2007 follow-up, became the rapper's second Top Ten album upon release that April. Similar to the debut in its uncomplicated approach, it included the charting singles "Break 'Em Off" (featuring Lil' Keke) and "I'm Throwed" (featuring Jermaine Dupri), along with "Drive Slow," which originally appeared on Kanye West's The College Dropout. Wall would release two more solo albums for Swishahouse. Fast Life appeared in May 2009 and entered the Billboard 200 at number 15. While it served up plenty of party tracks, it also revealed another side of Wall with the introspective "Daddy Wasn't Home." Just over a year later, Wall was back with the number 58 chart entry Heart of a Champion, half of which was produced by blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. Having set up Paul Wall Music, Wall eased into label independence in 2013 with #Checkseason, and over the next three years continued to churn out solo albums on an annual basis. The Po-Up Poet, a collaboration with producer June "The Jenius" James, was trailed by Slab God, boasting appearances from Snoop Dogg and Devin the Dude, and the Houston Oiler, including featured spots from well-known locals like Z-Ro, Slim Thug, and, naturally, Chamillionaire. The 2018 release Bounce Backs Over Setbacks was Wall's final studio album of the 2010s, a decade in which he also recorded co-billed projects with the likes of Baby Bash and Statik Selektah and further supplemented with a handful of additional mixtapes. The rapper entered the 2020s as a bona fide Houston hip-hop veteran and continued his prolific release rate. Mind Over Matter and Subculture, Wall's 11th and 12th solo studio albums, both landed in 2020, as did Slab Talk, co-billed to Lil' Keke. Solo album 13, Hall of Fame Hustler, was out the next year. In 2022, Wall teamed with Termanology for Start 2 Finish and with Bash for the third volume of their mixtape series The Legalizers. New York based independent rock band Red Vox’s music video for “Garbage Land” was recently ranked #54 in Rate Your Music’s list of 100 Best Music Videos of 2024. In 2026, they released their 6th album, "Retcon," which quickly became the best-selling album on Bandcamp for a day. Their 2018 single “Stranded” reached #35 in Rate Your Music’s Top 100 Singles of 2018, and in the same year, their sophomore album “Another Light” reached #13 on Billboard’s Heatseekers album chart. As of 2026, their most popular song, “In The Garden,” has almost 8 million streams on Spotify alone, with many others over a million. To date, they have nearly 80 million streams on Spotify and have sold over 10,000 physical records. Their concert at Too Many Games 2024 saw the floor packed with 600 people, several hundred more having to be turned away. They trended on Twitter before, during, and after the show. Their fanbase is close-knit, dedicated, and ever-growing, with some traveling hundreds of miles to see the band’s 4th performance. None of the members are strangers to the stage: each band member has at least 20 years experience in performing. In a thrilling night at Super MAGfest 2025,the band took the stage to a crowd of nearly 1,500 enthusiastic fans, many of whom brought their 3DS consoles and Game Boy Cameras to capture the performance. Later, in June, the band played a 90 minutes of music from across their entire discography to a crowded show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. Sonically, they never stay in one place for too long, shifting effortlessly from 90s grunge to 60s psychedelia to 80s synth-rock and back again. With polished modern production, it all comes together in a timeless, otherworldly sound. “Visions and Afterthoughts” is reminiscent of acts including Stone Temple Pilots, the Beatles, MGMT, and R.E.M., sometimes hitting all within the same song. Their latest singles: Remember, The New Flesh, A/V and Crony explore and add depth to their sound. Red Vox are a band that creates music that speaks to them on a deeper level but know how to have fun. With the debut of their online presence in summer 2008, Pomplamoose (a derivation of the French word for grapefruit, pamplemousse) has garnered a significant fan following ever since. Not far from the tiny town of Floyd, Virginia, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the childhood home of The Wildmans. The sibling duo are currently navigating the release of their debut album, Longtime Friend, for New West Records. And today truly feels like a full circle moment. “It’s surreal. It’s weird,” says Elisha Wildman. “We’re really excited for something to happen, to share our original music. And this feels like a really great jumping point.” Alongside his sister, Aila, the Americana/indie-folk act have been garnering a lot of attention in recent years, with Longtime Friend showcasing their interlacing harmonies and musical virtuosity — the sound itself at the sonic crossroads of Americana, alt-country and folk. “It feels like we’ve been building up to this, taking our time and setting all the pieces in line," Elisha says. “[With Longtime Friend], we’ve naturally progressed under the indie-folk umbrella,” Aila adds. “But, we still are doing old-time tunes, where we’ve realized it’s an important aspect of our musicianship, which ties us to our roots and how we grew up.” Captured at Applehead Recording in Woodstock, New York, with producer Nicholas Falk, the 12-song LP was cultivated in the midst of Aila and Elisha each finishing school at the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. “In a certain way, Woodstock reminded me of Floyd,” Aila says. “It was nice to get out of Boston and be back in the mountains, in the woods, to be part of this artistic experience [at Applehead].” Growing up in Floyd, Aila and Elisha were immersed in the rich, vibrant bluegrass and old-time music scenes. As kids, Elisha picked up the guitar and mandolin, while Aila reached for the fiddle. They became enamored with their instruments, which parlayed itself into both winning numerous renowned competitions around Southern Appalachia. “Floyd holds an important place in our hearts and in our music,” Aila says. “It also has been pretty natural to have all of this happen while we’re here.” On the surface, Longtime Friend is a blend of original melodies, traditional instrumentals and a handful of covers. But, digging deeper, there’s an array of subtle odes to the musical heroes of The Wildmans, including to the late singer-songwriter Gram Parsons on “Hot Burrito #2” and “Luxury Liner.” “[Gram’s] harmonies with Emmylou Harris are really inspiring,” Elisha says. “And also, how he kind of created this genre that’s just unique and really blends a lot of the aspects of music we like together, to create a new thing. His songwriting has always been inspirational.” “And we’ve taken a lot from listening to [Gram and Emmylou],” Aila adds. “It fits well with the way our voices are and the way stuff works between us.” That collage of sound and scope is at the heart of what it is The Wildmans are aiming to do. It’s taking the essence of their intricate musicality in the bluegrass and old-time realms and sliding that into more contemporary tones of Americana and indie-folk. “[Bluegrass and old-time] is something natural to our musicianship,” Aila says. “The other natural counterpart of that is growing it and taking it in different directions, which is something that’s always naturally happened in that music, anyways.” And just like the “Father of Bluegrass,” Bill Monroe, was known to say, “If you can play my music, you can play anything,” so, too, remains this genuine attitude of curiosity, exploration and discovery in the melodic hearts of The Wildmans. “When you take it in your own hands to write your own music, it’s much easier to meld those influences and make it your own, make it applicable to what you’re doing,” Aila says. “It feels good to not try to fit into something,” Elisha adds. “To just be true to ourselves and kind of let loose.” Aila emphasizes that “going with the flow” approach is the underlying ethos of Longtime Friend, this personal and profound joy of simply playing what you want to play in the way you want to play it. “It’s not, ‘Oh, we’re going to take this old-time tune and make it different,’” Aila says. “It’s, ‘We’re going to take this old-time tune and rock out, groove with some drums and electric guitar.’ That’s what feels good — it’s fun for us.” With Longtime Friend released into the ether, the time for rest and relaxation for The Wildmans in Floyd is fleeting. With a slew of tour dates appearing on the horizon, as are the endless miles along the highways and backroads of America. No matter, for this is what the siblings have yearned for since they were kids wondering just what lies beyond the mountain ridges surrounding their home. “When you’re siblings — and if you’ve made it as close as we are — you’ve probably been through most of the things that could tear apart people’s relationships,” Aila says. “We’re in it. We’ve been in it.”

Known for detailed wordplay imbued with filth and humor, Action Bronson draws influence from the likes of fellow Queens native Kool G Rap and Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah, and calls upon his past life as a chef to spit major culinary knowledge. The rapper emerged from the underground in the early 2010s and crashed the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 with Mr. Wonderful (2015), his major-label debut, featuring the gold-certified Chance the Rapper collaboration "Baby Blue." He has since expanded his reach as a television personality, author, and actor, and has juggled this work with continued artistic growth displayed on full-lengths such as Blue Chips 7000 (2017) and the Loma Vista-issued efforts Only for Dolphins (2020) and Cocodrillo Turbo (2022). He self-issued Johann Sebastian Bachlava the Doctor in 2024. A New York City native from Queens' Flushing neighborhood, Bronson, born Ariyan Arslani, developed his first area of expertise in his family's restaurant. After studying at the Art Institute of New York City's culinary program, he filled multiple roles in the restaurant industry. Serious effort wasn't put into rapping -- which he had started on a lark -- until a broken leg precluded kitchen work. Bronson's first major showcase arrived in the form of a 2007 mixtape as a member the Outdoorsmen, which was trailed by several guest verses and a solo single. His career truly achieved flight in 2011, a year in which he released his debut mixtape, as well as his first two proper albums, Dr. Lecter and Well-Done, the latter co-billed to producer Statik Selektah. After Bronson issued mixtapes recorded with Party Supplies and the Alchemist, the rapper made his major-label debut on Atlantic (via Vice) in 2013 with Saaab Stories, a Harry Fraud-produced EP. Given an extra boost by appearances from Prodigy and Raekwon, two of Bronson's key '90s hardcore inspirations, the EP peaked at number six on Billboard's rap chart. Another collaborative tape with Party Supplies was out by the end of that year. Bronson continued to stockpile guest verses on the way to third album Mr. Wonderful. The success of pre-release single "Baby Blue," featuring Chance the Rapper, helped take the full-length to number two on the rap chart and number seven on the Billboard 200. In 2016, Bronson took his food-and-travel web series, Fuck, That's Delicious, to cable television, and only a few months later launched a second series for the Viceland channel, Traveling the Stars: Action Bronson and Friends Watch Ancient Aliens. The Traveling the Stars theme "Descendant of the Stars," "Durag vs. Headband," and the Suicide Squad: The Album inclusion "Standing in the Rain" also reached the public during 2016. Another album for Atlantic, Blue Chips 7000, and a book, Fuck, That's Delicious: An Annotated Guide to Eating Well, arrived in 2017. He also starred in a cooking show of the same name. The following year, Bronson self-released his fourth album, White Bronco, which featured the Daringer-produced title track and a handful of Knxwledge collaborations highlighted by "Prince Charming." Although Bronson continued to diversify through the end of the 2010s and into the 2020s -- he appeared in the films The Irishman and The King of Staten Island, for instance -- it didn't slow his musical output. Teamed again with frequent collaborator the Alchemist, he returned near the end of 2019 with the Lamb Over Rice EP, and at the start of 2020 added key inspiration Kool G Rap to the list of artists who have received one of his guest verses (heard on "A Queen's Thing"). Bronson's next album, Only for Dolphins, arrived in 2020 with the rapper's typically brash rhymes outfitted with wide-ranging productions referencing Latin soul, reggae, and even mid-'80s Russian fusion. 2022's Cocodrillo Turbo featured similarly trippy production, as well as guest appearances by Conway the Machine, Roc Marciano, Meyhem Lauren, and others. Ok Cowgirl is an American rock band reminiscent of a past before streaming, algorithms, and AI slop, when a band was a way of life. The band—made up of singer and songwriter Leah Lavigne, guitarist Jacob Sabinsky, multi-instrumentalist John Miller, bassist Ryan Work, and drummer Matt Birkenholz—conjures the anthemic nostalgia and joyful rebelliousness of Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair, and Bruce Springsteen. At the same time, Rhinestone Cowgirl, their sophomore LP, places Ok Cowgirl in the lineage of modern auteurs like Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff, and Angel Olsen and fits nicely into the world of renowned producer Alex Farrar’s other work with MJ Lenderman, Wednesday, Indigo De Souza, and Girl Puppy. Furthermore, Rhinestone Cowgirl is an American rock record. Cue wistful desert vistas and empty highways; dim yellow lights hanging above a scuffed green pool table felt. This is drinking music. It’s a soundtrack to nursing our accumulated wounds. It asks us to ask ourselves how we made it this far. It is survivor’s guilt, a grappling with who we had to leave behind, why we did, and what it might have looked like if we had played our hand differently. “Sometimes I wonder if she would’ve died / If she would’ve left with me,” Lavigne asks on the title track. It’s a question without a simple answer, and this yearning lies at the heart of Rhinestone Cowgirl. That’s not to say Ok Cowgirl believes there are no ways to cope beyond the aforementioned comfort at the bottom of a bottle. There is a certain dark sense of humor underlying Lavigne’s stoic acceptance of the profound tragedy of the human condition. “So babe laugh a good laugh / Carve your own path / Got no answers to share,” she offers on “God Made A Farmer.” It’s an easier pill to swallow when you can share it with others, “Laughing about the dark stuff / I knew we could be friends,” she sings on “Winner.” It’s not an answer, but it’s the best thing we’ve got—the sense that, in one another, we can find solidarity and camaraderie in the absurdity of our struggle. “Life will break our hearts and take our pride / Hold onto the ones that see you right,” she proclaims on “Rock N Roll Ruined My Life.” For a band that made a name for themselves in the New York indie rock scene, building community show by show in warehouse lofts and dive bars, sharpening their sound on small stages over the last eight years, this precious knowledge has been earned—and they prefer it that way. These years of honing are apparent in the confidence of the composition, arrangement, and production. The satisfaction of a perfectly placed backbeat on “Fun Girl"; the crunch of stacked guitars on the chorus of “Rock N Roll Ruined My Life"; the finger-picked guitar and swirling atmospherics of “Wished I Could Be"; the powerfully sparse spaghetti-western guitars on the title track; and tempos that feel lived-in like an old leather saddle all speak to this hard-earned experience. This is the work of veteran craftsmen with complete command of their tools. Much like Lavigne’s carefully crafted lyrics, each melody, counter-melody, chord progression & groove is thoughtfully considered but not overwrought. More than that, it is all in service of The Song, and you can feel that genre and style concerns are secondary to telling the story. Rhinestone Cowgirl tells stories about learning to accept what is out of our control. In this capitalist society, we’re told we can manifest our own reality and create our own good fortunes, but we are no fools. As Lavigne puts it, “When the game is rigged, none of us really win.” It’s a cutting portrait of a cruel world, but acceptance does not beget apathy for Lavigne. “I do have a lot I love / Cliché to thank the stars above / But I’m still gonna do it,” she belts in “Prepared To Lose.” It’s the sound of defiance, of perseverance, of understanding and wielding the power we do have.

One of these tapes got into the hands of fellow Detroiters Slum Village, who were impressed by what they heard and invited Cross to produce a track on their 2002 mixtape Dirty District, as well as on their official full-length Trinity (Past, Present and Future). After that, Cross, who was going as Black Milk, teamed up with producer RJ Rice, Jr. (or Young RJ) as the group B.R. Gunna, rhyming and making beats on the duo's 2004 release Dirty District, Vol. 2. That same year, Slum Village, who were looking for production work because usual beatmakers Waajeed and Kareem Riggins were busy with other projects, hired B.R. Gunna for 11 of the 13 tracks on their Detroit Deli LP. In 2005, without a label and with his group on hiatus, Black Milk went on to release Sound of the City, which was more of a mixtape than a typical album, on his own Music House Records, and shortly thereafter worked on SV's self-titled record. By this time, indie rap label Fat Beats had heard Black Milk's work, which many compared to that of the late J Dilla and producer/MC Madlib; impressed, the label signed him in 2006 and issued his official solo debut, Popular Demand, in March of 2007. Late that same year, a joint Bishop Lamont/Black Milk tape, mixed by DJ Warrior, hit the streets, a slightly modified version of which was mastered and released commercially by Music House early in 2008, and just a few months later his collaboration with fellow Detroiter Fat Ray, The Set Up, came out. In October, he capped off the productive year with the release of his second official solo album, the Detroit techno-influenced Tronic. He worked with a four-piece live band for 2010's Album of the Year, a heavily rock-influenced effort that featured guest artists Royce da 5'9" and eLZhi. In 2011, he teamed up with New York's Sean Price and Detroit's Guilty Simpson, releasing a self-titled album as Random Axe, in addition to collaborating with another fellow Detroiter, Danny Brown, for Black and Brown! He also paid a visit to Jack White's Third Man studios in Nashville, resulting in the 7" single Brain and the LP Third Man Live 04-08-2011. Instrumental release Synth or Soul -- the first album issued on his Computer Ugly label -- preceded his 2013 effort, No Poison No Paradise, which featured guests Black Thought (the Roots), Robert Glasper, and Dwele. If There's a Hell Below followed in 2014, with Bun B and Pete Rock among those featured. Two years later he released the all-instrumental album The Rebellion Sessions. The LP was a collaborative effort with his backing band, now billed as Nat Turner, named after the U.S. slave rebellion leader. The pensive Fever appeared in 2018 with a small cast of supporting musicians who included drummers Chris Dave and Daru Jones. Pinkshift's infectious melodies, incisive yet vulnerable writing style, and diverse ethnic backgrounds have helped make the Baltimore trio beacons of the modern pop-punk scene. Led by Grammy-winning producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer/songwriter Jack Antonoff, Bleachers turns the sounds of '80s pop and college rock into buoyant, grandly emotional songs. Along with his work as a producer for stars such as Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey, Antonoff delivers heartfelt anthems like "I Wanna Get Better," Bleachers' 2014 certified-platinum debut single. That year's debut album, Strange Desire -- which cracked the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 -- presented Bleachers' relatable synth pop in its purest form. Though Antonoff added inventive sonics to 2017's Gone Now, revisited his Jersey roots with Bruce Springsteen on 2021's Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night, and looked inward on 2024's Bleachers and 2026's Everyone for Ten Minutes, Bleachers always wrapped genuine emotions in unabashedly big sounds. Antonoff began working on music for Bleachers in secret while touring in support of Fun.'s Grammy-winning album Some Nights. The song topped Billboard's Alternative Airplay and Bubbling Under Hot 100 charts and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA. Arriving that July, Bleachers' first full-length, Strange Desire, was also a success, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and number two on the Top Rock Albums chart. Featuring co-production by John Hill and Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure) and appearances by Yoko Ono and Grimes, the album also spawned two more hit singles, "Rollercoaster" and "Like a River Runs." After Strange Desire's release, Antonoff put together a live band and launched a tour that lasted through most of 2015. That September, Bleachers released Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2, which featured versions of all the songs from Strange Desire performed by female artists, including Carly Rae Jepsen, Elle King, Tinashe, and Antonoff's sister Rachel. Also in 2015, Bleachers covered the Beatles' "Dear Prudence" and made a cameo in the film Hello, My Name Is Doris as the band Baby Goya and the Nuclear Winters. Following Antonoff's work with Taylor Swift on her album Reputation and the Fifty Shades Darker song "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," Bleachers returned in June 2017 with Gone Now. Another collaboration with Clarke, the album also featured Lorde and was inspired by Antonoff's memories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and his sister's death from cancer when he was 18. Recorded in his home studio and previewed in an art installation that replicated his childhood bedroom, Gone Now peaked at number six on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart and included the singles "I Miss Those Days" and "Don't Take the Money," which was certified gold by the RIAA. While on tour in support of the album, Bleachers performed an MTV Unplugged show at Asbury Park, New Jersey that was released as an album in November 2017. Love, Simon [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] March 2017 saw the release of the soundtrack to the film Love, Simon, to which Antonoff contributed songs as Bleachers and under his own name. One of Bleachers' songs, "Alfie's Song (Not So Typical Love Song)," reached number 36 on Billboard's Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. In March 2019, Terrible Thrills, Vol. 3, arrived and featured versions of Gone Now's songs as performed by female artists including MUNA, Mitski, and Julien Baker. Along with Antonoff's production work for Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and the Chicks, Bleachers covered R.E.M.'s "At My Most Beautiful" and collaborated with Carly Rae Jepsen on her May 2020 single "Comeback." That November, they returned with the singles "45" and "Chinatown," a duet with Bruce Springsteen that became a Top 20 hit on Billboard's Adult Top 40 Airplay chart. Both songs were included on July 2021's Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night, a more organic take on the Bleachers sound featuring production assists from Patrik Berger and St. Vincent's Annie Clark and vocals from Lana Del Rey. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and also included "Stop Making This Hurt," another charting hit on the Adult Top 40 Airplay chart. In 2022, Bleachers contributed a cover of John Lennon's "Instant Karma!" to the Minions: Rise of Gru soundtrack and remixed Swift's "Anti-Hero." Following a tour with support from artists including Wolf Alice, Beabadoobee, and the Lemon Twigs, Bleachers reunited with Del Rey in early 2023 on the Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd single "Margaret," which appeared on Billboard's Hot Rock/Alternative Songs chart. After Bleachers signed to Dirty Hit, Live at Radio City Music Hall appeared in August. Defying easy categorization, Canadian musician Jutes explores everything from trap-infused hip-hop to aggressive pop-punk. After a string of buzzed-about singles and two EPs, he debuted with 2021's Careful What You Wish For, followed by 2022's Hot Trash. He also scored co-writes on Demi Lovato's Holy Fvck before delivering 2023's Ladybug and 2024's Sleepyhead. In 2025, he released Dilworth, earning a Juno nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Jordan Lutes was born in 1991 in the Canadian capital of Ottawa and grew up in Toronto. Initially interested in basketball more than music as a youth, he also studied film before putting education on hold to pursue music full-time. Early, self-released singles like "Free" (2015), "Cocaine Cinderella" (2016), "I Don't Need Ya" (2016), and "Notice Me" (2017) paired lo-fi, stuttering trap rhythms with Jutes' laid-back, melodic rap flow. A spate of singles in 2018 and 2019, including "Pretty When U Cry," "Tired," and "You Hate What I've Become," started to blend genres even further, including R&B-adjacent Auto-Tuned crooning and hints of emo guitar. This blend of styles eventually landed Jutes a deal with Capitol Records in early 2020, and the label released the alternative-flavored EPs Overrated and A Really Bad Dream, the latter of which featured some engaging tracks in "Bad Dream," "Say It First," and "Backseat (Kiss Me)" -- all mirroring the mgk-style hip-hop to pop-punk pipeline. Ultimately, post-COVID budget shrinkage and his desire for greater musical control led to a parting of ways with the label. Jutes spent the first half of 2021 opening the floodgates on his musical vault, releasing single after single through the winter and spring and eventually collecting them on the nervy Careful What You Wish For, inspired in part by his experience in the major-label machine. Jutes' next project, 2022's Hot Trash, pivoted even further into alt-rock, anchored by the chugging, anthemic "Hollywood Hillbilly." This genre flip proved fateful in more ways than one: a writing/producing partner, Keith "Ten4" Sorrells, recruited Jutes to lend a hand on that year's Holy Fvck, a pivot back to pop-punk for erstwhile teen-pop belter Demi Lovato. Besides three co-writing credits on the album -- a Top Ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic -- Jutes and Lovato struck up a friendship that turned romantic. The creative commonality between the pair kept influencing Jutes, and the proximity to an oft-discussed musician didn't hurt either: 2023's Ladybug kept up the pop-punk energy, while 2024's Sleepyhead -- his first release after becoming engaged to Lovato -- became his most-streamed work to date. The couple married in 2025, the same year Jutes released his fifth album, Dilworth. he last two years took a toll on singer-songwriter and actor John Gallagher Jr. For any middle-aged multi-hyphenate straining to claim a corner stall in music’s ever-evolving marketplace, it’s clearer than ever that you have to go for broke if you want anyone to slow down and take note of what you have to offer. And so, with The Big 4-0 in the headlights and a few decades of scattered showbiz success in the rearview, John vowed to go big rather than go home. He threw every cell of himself (and every cent in his wallet) into two long-gestating passion projects, one being the achingly autobiographical jangle-folk breakup record Goodbye or Something, and the other, the epic roots-rock musical Swept Away featuring the songs of acclaimed Americana act The Avett Brothers in which Gallagher starred. After an eight-year journey through workshops, COVID delays and sold out regional theater productions, the show was finally set to open on Broadway in November 2024, just a few months after the release of John’s cathartic and confessional third LP. The timing was perfect, the pieces were falling into place and the stage was set for a knockout one-two artistic punch. John steeled himself for a high-profile year of creative expression and personal reinvention. But by the end of December, despite opening to rave reviews, Swept Away swiftly closed due to poor ticket sales and Goodbye or Something was lightyears away from anybody’s buzzy Year End list. John had swung for the fences and struck out. Fearing a total career collapse, John retreated to his Brooklyn, NY apartment and survived the harsh winter by bingeing bourbon, both seasons of Severance and surrendering to a series of reassuring pep talks from his saint of a girlfriend. After several months spent in wound-licking hibernation, John eventually tip-toed back out amongst the living to assess the damage and clear the debris. He started small with a few live shows, some as a solo act and some backed by his hard-hitting band, the Summer Flame. Lo and behold, audiences showed up to listen and sing along. It turned out all was not lost and it was only a matter of time before John found the fun in making music again. What’s more was that this new music he was making felt far too electric, immediate and relatable to withhold from the eager ears of his limited but loyal listeners. The next step seemed obvious: it was time to go back into the studio. With a burst of try, try again doggedness comes John’s new EP, Almost Ok, his second release on the New Hope, PA-based indie label Grand Phony Music. If their last outing together, Goodbye or Something, was an ambitious bridge spanning the storm surge of Gallagher’s then-wrecked romantic life, Almost Ok is an understated set of stepping stones across a rushing river to safe passage. “I was going through a seismic life shift on my last record and hoped its release would make a proportionate splash. Ultimately it barely caused a ripple,” Gallagher recalls. “Combine that letdown with the heartbreak of Swept Away closing so suddenly and I was forced to relearn an age-old lesson about the perils of great expectations. Dreaming big can be dangerous. This time around I needed to scale it all back. Just play a few songs with my band and not overthink it.” Initially imagined as a 7-inch made up of the mellow Jeff Tweedy-twinged nostalgic daydream “Lido Lane” and Laurel Canyon-lacquered road anthem/love letter “Mitsuko,” the first few sessions at Studio G in Brooklyn, NY coalesced with such invigorating and validating ease, it was clear that this record wanted to be bigger than just two songs. So the band reconvened a few months later for another round of recording overseen by the producing pair of Oscar Albis Rodriguez and Zach Jones, who also serve as crackerjack lead guitarist and diesel-driving drummer/vocalist, respectively. Fellow Grand Phony artist Hannah Winkler added her effortless keys and vocals to the tracks and the steady, sturdy Tim Lappin provided bass. Each member an accomplished singer-songwriter in their own right. The ensemble had cut their teeth playing together live for two years but Almost Ok would be the first attempt to capture their sound on record. The resulting tracks convey the same playful dynamism they bring to the stage. The power-pop tragicomic album opener “Tough Spit” conjures a mid-80s Elvis Costello and the Attractions as it paints a playfully paranoid picture of the current state of America’s sociopolitical mediascape. “I was gonna go to the store / But I don’t really wanna get shot,” Gallagher sings over thumping toms and palm-muted guitars, “Besides there isn’t that much more I could buy that wouldn’t speed up the Doomsday Clock.” The second track “Never Leave” shifts gears as it lulls listeners into an acoustic finger-picked rumination on a bittersweet rum- and remorse- soaked family trip to the Jersey Shore reminiscent of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s rich ballads. “New Jersey transit is a great place to be sad,” John laments in the lyrics, “You can stare out the window wracked with guilt and feeling bad about the time you raised your voice and were mean for no reason to your dad.” “All This Changing” namechecks the EP title directly as Gallagher’s mournful tenor weathers a deep depression before hinting at a peaceful parting of the clouds. “Baby, appreciate you waiting / And wading with me through all this changing,” John professes in the final chorus, “And one day the sun will shine and I’ll say / Hey how about that / I’m feeling almost ok.” Perhaps more so than on his previous three records, John proves here that he is just as comfortable mining a softer, quiet introspection as he is plugging in and powering through. “There’s a reason I always come back to artists like Bruce Springsteen, Paul Westerberg, Tom Petty and Neil Young,” John muses. “I’ve always been drawn to rock and roll frontmen who are not so secretly sensitive singer-songwriters at their core. My parents weaned me on folk music after all. I guess I still like to split the difference.” While some records are proclamations, the five songs of Almost Ok arrive more like a postcard from a state of being. A brief communique by someone who is on the mend. Like most EPs, this one is over too soon but for those left wanting more, good news is on the way. John already has the makings for several follow-ups, and this latest release comes with an uptick in chances to catch him live. 2026 sees John hitting the road with more frequency both as an acoustic solo act and with his trusty band in tow. “I’ve been writing songs and playing live for twenty seven years but my acting career caught on early and took off. My music has mostly been a DIY side project. I’m trying to make up for that now.” John reflects. “Whether it’s five people listening or five hundred, I still have the hunger to share this music while I can with whomever shows up to hear it.” Much like enduring heartbreak and professional setbacks, releasing new, original music as an independent artist can be a vulnerable, sometimes painful exploit, rigged with sky-high fantasies and cavernous actualities. Once on the other side of saying your piece and baring your soul, it’s all too tempting to swear you’ll never put yourself through the wringer again. But with lyrics so immediate and poignant sung with such assured earnestness, delivered atop a glut of rollicking live-wire buoyancy, it makes perfect sense why John Gallagher Jr. is putting himself back out there.

JP Orchison has taken the Blanke project from his native Australia to the World. After being named Triple J’s Unearthed Artist of the Week in November 2020, Blanke’s ‘Alchemy’ was added to High Rotation on the Australian station, peaking at 42 on Shazam and hitting the number 1 most played record on the station. London-born singer/songwriter and poet Arlo Parks pens vividly descriptive lyrics about young adult emotional experiences and mental health awareness, accompanied by an enticing mixture of bedroom pop and indie soul. She first received attention for several early singles and two 2019 EPs, which gained BBC Radio 1 airplay and praise from publications such as NME. Her 2021 full-length debut, Collapsed in Sunbeams, reached number three on the U.K. album chart and was met with widespread acclaim, winning Parks the Brit Award for Best New Artist and the 2021 Mercury Prize. On her second album, 2023's My Soft Machine, she expressed feelings related to the anxiety of constant touring and her first serious relationship, among other personal topics. Ambiguous Desire, her club-inspired third album, arrived in 2026. Born Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho in 2000, of Nigerian, French, and Chadian heritage, Parks debuted in 2018 with the single "Cola." The track ultimately appeared on April 2019's Beatnik-issued Super Sad Generation EP, a release that caught the attention of Transgressive, which signed her a month later, before she'd finished her A-Level exams. After a run of singles -- and a collaboration with Leicester's hard life on their Junk Food track "Sangria" -- she issued a second EP, Sophie, leading to a placement on the BBC's Sound of 2020 list. By May 2020, Parks' "Black Dog" single was playlisted by BBC Radio 1, broadcasting its theme of mental health awareness to millions. This simultaneously boosted her profile and led to an association with the charity CALM. That track, and its double A-side "Eugene," were co-written and produced by the New York-based Gianluca Buccellati, who had also worked with her on "Cola" and the title tracks of her EPs. This release was swiftly followed by a heartfelt, piano-led cover of Radiohead's "Creep." Arlo Parks' debut full-length, the Grammy-nominated Collapsed in Sunbeams, arrived in January 2021. A series of vignettes about her adolescence, it opened with a scored poem. Parks performed her single "Hope" at the 2021 Brit Awards, where she was named Best New Artist. In September, Collapsed in Sunbeams won the prestigious Mercury Prize for album of the year. Parks released the non-album single "Softly" in 2022, and spent much of the year on tour, both as a headliner and with Clairo, who appeared on her first album's "Green Eyes." She also relocated to Los Angeles; however, in September, she was forced to cancel several tour dates due to exhaustion and burnout and returned to London to recuperate. Parks announced her second album, My Soft Machine, in early 2023, accompanied by the release of first single and video "Weightless." Focusing on navigating life in her twenties, the album arrived in May, with Phoebe Bridgers guesting on the song "Pegasus." The Magic Border, a book containing song lyrics, poems, and photos, was published in September. My Soft Machine's deluxe edition arrived in December, including acoustic versions of album tracks, guest features by Louis and the Yakuza and Redveil, and covers of tunes by Jai Paul and Tirzah. Parks received a writing credit on Beyoncé's 2024 Grammy-winning album Cowboy Carter, for the song "YA YA." During the same year, Parks appeared on Khalid's song "Breathe," from the album Sincere. Parks spent much time in nocturnal spaces, losing herself on the dancefloor, following the release of My Soft Machine. She experimented with more electronic instruments than before, and also began DJ'ing.
