You scream; I scream; we all scream for ice cream. But theatergoers have a proclivity for pizza—Mystic Pizza that is. The beloved jukebox musical, Mystic Pizza: A New Musical, made its rounds across the country for a few pop-up showings.
This coming fall, Mystic Pizza: A New Musical will officially kick off its long-awaited national tour. The production, which was written by Sandy Rustin with arrangements and orchestrations by Carmel Dean, received rave reviews from its 2021 premiere at Maine’s Ogunquit Playhouse. This led to a string of additional showings, including most recently at New Jersey’s Tony Award-winning venue, Paper Mill Playhouse.
On September 26, the tour will launch in Elmira, New York, at the Clemens Center. Along the 31-date national run, Mystic Pizza: A New Musical will make stops in New York, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and more.
For those unfamiliar with the 1988 film in which it was adapted, read the official synopsis for the musical below:
“Mystic Pizza: A New Musical delivers the beloved story from the iconic hit film driven by a score packed with unforgettable hits from the ’80s and ’90s. Follow best friends Kat, Daisy, and Jojo as they navigate the complexities of friendship and romance—all while slinging slices at a small-town pizza joint.”
Casting for the national tour has not yet been announced, but ARC is currently hard at work behind the scenes. However, according to Broadway World, the creative team for Mystic Pizza: A New Musical will seemingly remain the same.
Direction and choreography are by Jennifer Werner. The design team consists of scenery by Nate Bertone, lighting by Dalton Hamilton, costumes by Jen Caprio, and sound by Matt Kraus. While Andrew Graham serves as the music supervisor and Daniel Sher serves as the executive producer.
