Marvin Gaye is one of music’s most revered vocalists. Even over forty years after the late singer-songwriter’s death, his legacy lives on, with each generation of vocalists drawing inspiration from him. Now, fans of Gaye can learn about his iconic music and journey through show business in a new theater piece.
This fall, Je’Caryous Entertainment will bring the “Let’s Get It On” singer’s dazzling tale to stages across the country with MARVIN: The Marvin Gaye Musical. Beginning in October, the production is set to hit the road for a 23-show pre-Broadway tour. From then until February 27, the fresh new piece is scheduled to entertain audiences in Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Detroit, Michigan; Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; Cleveland, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Houston, Texas.
While Gaye’s legacy has been covered in several artistic works, including the dramatic stage play, My Brother Marvin, written by Gaye’s sister Zeola, which starred Lynn Whitfield and Clifton Powell. But Je’Caryous Entertainment’s founder, Je’Caryous Johnson, promises audiences haven’t experienced the story told in this way.
MARVIN: The Marvin Gaye Musical‘s official synopsis reads: “Enjoy this powerful new musical that chronicles the remarkable life of Marvin Gaye – his meteoric rise at Motown, his groundbreaking artistry, his unforgettable relationships, and the personal battles that shaped one of music’s greatest icons. Set against the backdrop of a nation in transition, Marvin’s journey unfolds through love, loss, faith, family, and the relentless pursuit of artistic truth. Musical numbers consist of Motown’s greatest hits.”
Only limited details surrounding MARVIN have been released. However, the production’s pre-sale web links suggest that the production has nearly a two-hour run time. The production’s synopsis places the story’s timeline between the 1960s and 1970s. Also, the production’s titling and description all hint at Gaye’s official music being featured in the play. Other productions centering Gaye’s life did not feature his music due to clearance issues with Gaye’s estate. However, the play’s synopsis only confirms that Motown music is sprinkled through the production.
Casting details for MARVIN: The Marvin Gaye Musical are also unknown at this time. But actor Chae Stephen previously held down the role in Je’Caryous Entertainment’s production, “The Greatest Love Singer of All Time Tribute Show.” Stephen received rave reviews for his performance, which has patrons hoping he is announced as MARVIN‘s leading man.
Je’Caryous Entertainment co-produced the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s acclaimed play, Joe Turner’s Come And Gone, which starred Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson, as well as Set It Off: The Play, which starred Felicia “Snoop” Pearson.
