Music and film award season may be over, but for the theater world, things are just beginning. On May 11, several Broadway and Off-Broadway theatrical productions (plays as well as musicals) added another notch to their belts following the announcement of Outer Critics Circle winners.
Across the 27 categories, two productions showed their dominance as the top winners from the 2026 Outer Critics Circle Awards. Broadway newbie “Schmigadoon!” by Cinco Paul and beloved classic “Ragtime” by Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty both earned five wins each.
For “Schmigadoon!” that includes Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Outstanding Choreography (Christopher Gattelli), and Outstanding Costume Design (Linda Cho). Dynamic duo Doug Besterman and Mike Morris took home Outstanding Orchestrations (Broadway or Off-Broadway). Lastly, Cinco Paul took home Outstanding Book of a Musical (Broadway or Off-Broadway).
Wins for “Ragtime” include Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical (Joshua Henry), Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Musical (Ben Levi Ross), Outstanding Video/Projection Design (59 Studio), and Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Lear deBessonet).
“Death of a Salesman” and “Mexodus” followed behind with four wins each. “Death of a Salesman” took home the wins for Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Play (Laurie Metcalf), Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Play (Nathan Lane), and Outstanding Direction of a Play (Joe Mantello).
While “Mexodus” snagged Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical, Outstanding Sound Design (Mikhail Fiksel), Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Musical (Nygel D. Robinson). The production’s sonic mastermind Brian Quijada, alongside star Nygel D. Robinson, took home Outstanding Score (Broadway or Off-Broadway).
With two wins each, “The Lost Boys” and “Well, I’ll Let You Go” round out the most awarded list. “The Lost Boys” won Outstanding Scenic Design (Dane Laffrey) and Outstanding Lighting Design (Jen Schriever and Michael Arden). Meanwhile, “Well, I’ll Let You Go” snatched Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Play (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) and the John Gassner Award.
Another standout victory during this year’s ceremony came by way of the John Gassner Award. The coveted honor, which is bestowed to new American plays and commonly to a new playwright, resulted in a tie. Both “Cold War Choir Practice” by Ro Reddick and “Well, I’ll Let You Go” by Bubba Weiler took home the award. The other John Gassner Award nominees included “Call Me Izzy” by Jamie Wax, “Caroline” by Preston Max Allen, and “Data” by Matthew Libby.
On May 21, the winners will be celebrated in a separate ceremony at Manhattan Movement & Arts Center (MMAC) located at 248 W 60th Street in New York City, New York.
