Three years ago, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque made her Broadway debut in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Following the 14-week engagement, the “Porcelain” singer stuck around, falling in love with theater life. But all good things come to an end.
Now JoJo is ready to make her long-awaited return. Beginning on June 23, JoJo will star in Chess, showing at the Imperial Theatre. With Lea Michele walking away from the production on June 21, JoJo is set to takeover for Michele in the role of Florence Vassy.
In a statement to PEOPLE, JoJo expressed her joy in returning to Broadway.
“It’s an incredible, exciting opportunity,” said JoJo. “As soon as I got to see this production of the show, I couldn’t stop getting chills. It feels incredibly right, and it is definitely going to be a challenge, but something that I’m excited for.”
JoJo will join the revival’s original leading cast members, Tony Award-winner Aaron Tveit (playing Freddie Trumper) and Nicholas Christopher (playing Anatoly Sergievsky). The other cast members include Hannah Cruz (playing Svetlana), Bradley Dean (playing Molokov), Sean Allan Krill (playing Walter), and Bryce Pinkham (playing The Arbiter).
The production’s ensemble cast consists of Kyla Bartholomeusz, Daniel Beeman, Shavey Brown, Emma Degerstedt, Casey Garvin, Adam Halpin, David Paul Kidder, Sarah Michele Lindsey, Michael Milkanin, Aleksandr Ivan Pevec, Aliah James, Sydney Jones, Sean MacLaughlin, Sarah Meahl, Ramone Nelson, Fredric Rodriguez Odgaard, Michael Olaribigbe, Katerina Papacostas, Samantha Pollino, Adam Roberts, Regine Sophia, and Katie Webber.
Chess features original music by Benny Andersson (of ABBA) and Björn Ulvaeus and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winner Tim Rice. The production is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. Chess is choreographed by Lorin Latarro and features orchestrations by Anders Eljas and Brian Usifer. The production features music supervision by Usifer.
