The Weather Station began the year with a bang. With the release of Humanhood on January 17th, the “Thirty” singer ended their nearly three-year musical hiatus.
Nearing the project’s anniversary, The Weather Station reached back into the vault to share two tracks, “Airport” and “Only The Truth,” that didn’t make the album.
Neither song lacks the striking Humanhood spark; rather, as The Weather Station wrote on Instagram, “Airport” and “Only The Truth” simply did not “have a place in the arc of the record.”
“[Airport] is a fierce little pop song that came out of nowhere,” The Weather Station charmingly confessed. “It describes a moment, in an airport, a space I’ve always found so deeply dehumanizing. This song tells a story of a person trying to mirror what is around them; that sort of shutting down, not caring, acting like you don’t care even when you really do.”
As for “Only The Truth,” its narrative is rooted in a concept far more psychological.
“[Only The Truth] is about how things that are not true, are based in unreality, have this glimmer and gleam, this intense energy that demands your belief,” wrote the musician on Instagram.
They continued: “Whereas by contrast, things that are true tend to be less exciting, don’t need you. I set this song in a conversation, a walk in a park, and through that conversation, I felt like I finished my thought in a way.”
