The year is shaping up to be a massive celebratory one for Chicago, Illinois. In the mid-2010s, the Windy City blew in a collective of groundbreaking music releases. Now, singer, songwriter, and poet Jamila Woods is stepping up to receive their professional flowers.
With her friends and collaborators Chance The Rapper and Noname having already announced tours to honor their breakthrough release, now is Jamila Woods’ turn. Although HEAVN dropped back in July 2016, it is not too late to honor the acclaimed project.
Over on Instagram, the “Holy” musician revealed they would take the album on the road as part of an intimate anniversary tour.
“We’re going on tour,” wrote Woods. “Come celebrate 10 years of HEAVN at these anniversary shows this fall.”
Across six dates beginning on November 16, Woods will travel to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Brooklyn, and their hometown of Chicago to play the project for die-hard supporters.
Later in the announcement, Woods went on to reflect on the body of work, writing, “From GarageBand demos on my laptop in 2015, to playing them to Sharod for the first time, to sessions with Oddcouple at Soundscape Studios, writing Bubbles Ayanna’s beat, writing HEAVN to a roots track on YouTube, asking my friends to leave me voicemails answering questions about Blackness & Vhicago.”
Woods continued: “Sessions with Carter, Dee Lilly, Peter. Verses by Saba, Fatimah, Chance. Nico’s horn. Kweku’s percussion, Lamar’s guitar, Amanda’s violin, Lorine, Allie, Tramaine & Jabari on vocals, Ralph and Greg on drums. Production by Nate, Loshendrix & Jus Cus. Closed Sessions graciously allowing my stubborn ass to release it for free online. JagJaguwar believing in me & wanting to give it a second life. To conclude the message, Woods went on to further express their deep gratitude.
