Los Angeles-based recording artist Jensen McRae’s newest release “Immune,” (via Human Re Sources) produced by Rahki is the vaccination anthem we never knew we needed. What began as a viral Twitter joke turned out to be the start to a better sonic journey.
Tweeting about how “in 2023 Phoebe Bridgers is gonna drop her third album & the opening track will be about hooking up in the car while waiting in line to get vaccinated at dodger stadium and it’s gonna make me cry,” listeners couldn’t expect the song would be actualized into a track full of emotional thoughts and fears, amplified by a beautiful tune and McRae’s powerfully poignant voice.
With shots of sunny California as a backdrop, in the accompanying video directed by Elizabeth Archer, McRae is seated in a car, lost in deep reflection as the simplicity of the song’s beats provides a serene soundtrack. Although simple, the melodic instrumentals match the lyrics perfectly— providing an affecting reckoning with post-pandemic life and love. As she begs the question, “what will we say to each other/ when the needle goes in? What will we be to each other/ if the world doesn’t end,” McRae gets to the core of her listeners’ thoughts and fears. Even if it’s not as instant as the actual trip to get vaccinated, inevitable, and impending change is felt when that shot goes in.
What has changed? What happens to the connections we’ve made during this time? The song doesn’t answer many questions, but it does invoke a deep relatability about this irreversible change that the pandemic birthed.
“It’s about how the emotional stakes of our relationships have been ratcheted up in light of global calamity,” says McRae.
“Immune” is just one song off of McRae’s recent EP release Who Hurt You?. As McRae grows as a singer-songwriter in her debut, she’s able to really capture the true feelings of confusion, vulnerability, and relationships during this critical moment in time.
