Fusing two distinctly 1970s strands of Americana, Daniel Donato melds the sinewy snap of outlaw country with the psychedelic pulse of the Grateful Dead. A plaintive, empathetic vocalist and a nimble guitarist, Donato hails from Nashville but favors the trippy jams of the West Coast, something that was evident on his 2020 debut A Young Man's Country and its 2023 sequel Reflector.
Born in Atlantic City but largely raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Daniel Donato was first drawn to music through Guitar Hero, a video game that turned a six-string into an adventure. Soon, he decided to pick up one of his dad's guitars. From that point forward, the young Donato became obsessed with guitar, eventually spending time busking at Broadway in Nashville. While still in high school, the Don Kelley Band invited him to play in their band. Soon, he was performing regularly with the group at the honky tonk Robert's Western World, gigging as much as four nights a week with the group.
Donato began to branch out from country music in his late teens thanks to an introduction to the Grateful Dead. He was soon immersed in hippie country-rock, as evidenced by his debut album A Young Man's Country. Recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium with producer Robben Ford, A Young Man's Country established Donato's guitar virtuosity and his eclecticism. After spending three years on the road -- he appeared on bills for artists as far-ranging as Paul Cauthen and Widespread Panic -- he returned with another freewheeling record in 2023's Reflector. - Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
