Alternative pop singer Simpson is back with a new track! Co-produced by James Drin, “Cherry Ice Cream Sundae” is a step-by-step account of a Black woman taking control back for her life while also holding those around her responsible for the way in which they view and treat her.

While the songwriter hasn’t fully asserted herself as a feminist, it’s hard not to view her as such. On previous single “I Miss My Dawgs” and now “Cherry Ice Cream Sundae”, Simpson continues to make the advancement and advocacy of women, more specifically women of color, the central theme of her music emphasized in lyrics, “good things come to those who wait / better things come to those who say ‘look now, the clouds are starting to change’.

The blend of the earthy saxophone played by David Winograd paired with Simpson’s raspy vocal delivery and simple songwriting, “Cherry Ice Cream Sundae” sounds as if Macy Gray and Erykah Badu had a moody love child.

In an interview with For The Punks, the Virginia native shared the inspiration behind the track stating, “[Cherry Ice Cream Sundae is about] who are we when we allow ourselves to be whole, unfiltered, messy and kind of like ice cream.”
