If you are an avid listener of R&B, Tiana Major9‘s name should set off a sense of sonic urgency. With several beloved feature verses on songs by Babyface and Lucky Daye, the East London native has undoubtedly carved out a lane for themselves.
After two projects 2020’s Back At Sixes And Sevens and 2021’s Major Mantras via Motown, Tiana Major9 is finally ready to make their full-length debut, but as an independent act. Next month, Tiana Major9’s long-awaited album, November Scorpio, will hit streaming platforms.
Tiana Major9’s new single, “Energy!” featuring Keyon Harrold, which was co-produced by J.L.L., PRGRSHN, and SHROOM (Tim Schoegje), should hold supporters over until November Scorpio‘s release.
Comprised of jazz arrangements, R&B vocal stylings, and the sway of Caribbean music, “Energy!” highlights an underappreciated element of Tiana Major9’s artistry — essence.
Upon first listen, “Energy!” appears to lack the soul-stirring songwriting most have come to expect from Tiana Major9. However, after the song’s message of an entranced connection piercing through you briskly remember that not all feelings are easy to articulate.
On “Energy!,” Tiana Major9’s sultry tonality, complemented by Harrold’s masterful work on the trumpet tell a story that the exhausting search for a fitting literary framework could quite sidetrack.
“Don’t ask me why my eyes are closed / Just build a spliff, no micro-dose / It’s always a vibe when you stop by / I love the way you look at me / I like the way you talk to me / You’re making me feel a little heated / I got the energy, yes, I got the energy,” sings Tiana Major9.
In a statement shared with ENVERT, Tiana Major9 discussed the story behind “Energy!”
“I wrote energy! in Jamaica at a really transitional time in my life and career,” said Tiana Major9. “I linked JLL at his studio in Kingston, and it felt like the lyrics were falling into my lap. PRGRSHN then added his magic, we did [background vocals], and Keyon sent over his trumpets. I love this song so much and am grateful to share it with these incredible musicians.”
“Energy!” follows Tiana Major9’s previously released November Scorpio singles “Money,” “Shook One,” “Alone,” and “Always with Yebba.
