Nearly half of Guerilla Toss‘ forthcoming fifth studio album, You’re Weird Now, is out. Between the lead singles “Psychosis Is Just A Number,” “CEO Of Personal & Pleasure,” “Life’s A Zoo,” and “Red Flag To Angry Bull,” fans have been served a “punk lunch” in the words of frontwoman Kassie Carlson.
But the full out communal meal won’t hit streaming services until September 12. Although it was said jokingly, according to drummer Peter Negroponte, Guerilla Toss’ greatest hits won’t exist until it is released.
“As a band, we’re always trying to reinvent ourselves,” said Negroponte. “But with this record, instead of asking what we haven’t tried, because we’ve done a lot of crazy stuff, we asked, what have we done that’s the strongest? And how can we build on that? Let’s dig into our own musical history and try to make the best parts even better.”
Although Guerilla Toss pulled inspiration from fellow musicians, “post-punk Pylon meets The Contortions,” Brian Eno, and Phish, the band has crafted something uniquely theirs.
“These people have been doing this forever, and they’ve internalized that they are musicians and their artistic choices are right for them, and they believe in them,” said Carlson. “It’s really just realness and being true to yourself—whatever that means for you.”
