Next month, Destin Conrad will kick off the US wing of his Love On Digital Tour. Before the “Make It Up” singer hit the stage, he decided to treat supporters to another body of work.
But instead of extending his overwhelmingly sexy R&B catalog, on wHIMSY, Destin Conrad ventures into the sultry world of alternative jazz. Well, the creative exploration has paid off.
Yesterday (August 28), wHIMSY secured the no. 1 slot on Apple Music’s jazz charts. The project finds itself in good company, as Laufey’s Bewitched holds onto the No. 2 spot, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue rests at No. 3, and the remastering of Frank Sinatra’s Nothing But The Best is comfortably at No. 4.
Over on X (formerly Twitter), Destin celebrated the accomplishment with his followers, writing: “Y’all, I got the number one jazz album on Apple Music […] what the f*ck.”
Prior to its release, Destin Conrad outlined the origins of wHIMSY on Instagram.
“‘wHIMSY’ my alt jazz album will be out on Thursday,” he wrote. “We practically finished this project on a 2-week trip I took to LA last month (I’m insane, I know) and it was the most fun I’ve had making music in such a long time!”
He then went on to thank his collaborators.
“I am so, so inspired by every musician that helped me make this project,” he penned. “Thank you to Louie Lastic, Mack Keane, Astyn Turr, Vanisha Gould, Terrace Martin, Ambré Perkins, James Fauntleroy, Keyon Harrold, Jada Watkiss Conteh, Ryan James Carr, Alexander Benjamin Goldblatt, Austin Brown Maxwell, Hunter Dan Foster, Jaylon Black, Ashton Sellars, Dominique Sanders, and Bay Davis.”
