Last year, Big Thief announced a major shakeup in its lineup. After nearly a decade of recording under the moniker, the band’s proud founding bassist, Max Oleartchik, left the group. As expected, the news upset Big Thief’s devoted fan base.
However, the remaining members, vocalist-guitarist Adrianne Lenker, guitarist Buck Meek, and drummer James Krivchenia, vowed this wasn’t the end of Big Thief. Now, they’re back and ready to follow up their Grammy Award-nominated album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You.
But Big Thief’s forthcoming project, Double Infinity, wasn’t made in isolation. Instead, the body of work was birthed out of an active investment in their surrounding creative community.
Alongside fellow musicians Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Laraaji, Mikel Patrick Avery, and Mikey Buishas, Big Thief concocted a nine-track offering.
“[Together we] would play for nine hours a day, tracking together – simultaneously – improvising arrangements and making collective discoveries,” reads a statement about the album from Big Thief’s team.
Big Thief’s longtime collaborator Dom Monks tied everything together as the solo producer, engineer, and mixer on Double Infinity.
