Your Smith’s last proper project, EP Wild Wild Woman, was released in 2019. In the six years to follow, the world of music has drastically changed, and so have many things in Your Smith’s life.
To enjoy her life as a mother, wife, and restaurateur, Your Smith decided to take a step back from music. Now, she’s back on a new label (Nettwerk Music Group), with a robust story to tell.
This fall, Your Smith’s debut release (under the moniker) The Rub will hit streaming services. Fans will dive into 13 tracks (including familiar tunes “Change Of Heart,” “Leaving You,” “Hey There’s My Girl,” “Mr. Revival,” “Little Highways,” and “Peaches”) all built around Your Smith’s new sonic signature.
Although Your Smith has kept any potential collaborator under wraps (additional producers, engineers, songwriters, etc.), in a lengthy Instagram post, she did shed light on the musical direction.
“So, yes, I’m sure you’re aware that ‘Mr. Revival’ is out,” she wrote. “But also the entire album, titled ‘The Rub,’ comes out September 12th. This is technically my debut album as Your Smith, which feels crazy, right? But even crazier is that ‘Mr. Revival’ flies from the nest.”
She continued: “I wrote ‘Mr. Revival’ with pop masters Captain Cuts. Neon Gold Records wanted to put us in a room together, and at first, I politely declined. Your Smith was decidedly my departure from industry pop. But Derek Davies is persistent and insisted I don’t cut myself off at the knees. So, I went to Rabin’s house and not only wrote a song that I regard as one of my personal bests, but I also made some life-long bros. If there’s any takeaway here, it doesn’t sell pop-writers short, turns out the good ones create the space for you to write an opus.”
She added: “…Cuts and Jake working together to get this song where it needed to go feels really f*cking symbolic to me, and it also felt like a look back over my shoulder to see all of the disparate camps I have in my rearview mirror that have always had these things in common: integrity, kindness, and (not to be cheesy) love.”
Your Smith went on to briefly address her split from Neon Gold, writing: “This song and subsequent full album are released with Nettwerk Music Group. A new home I’ve found myself at that also fits those 3 tenets. Thanks to them, the story continues.”
