Amidst the harsh reality of life, Indigo De Souza luckily reminds us of what life is truly about. In her new single, “HOLD U” off her new album Any Shape You Take (via Saddle Creek), she accentuates the simplicity of loving someone in a comforting space through a fresh indie-rock sound.
Starting with an easy opening, the use of muted synths and a top hat create the beat for Souza to introduce her calming voice. She effortlessly sings, “you are a good thing…and I would do anything for you”, promising that she’ll show up for this person. Regardless of the obstacles placed before her with support, things will be alright. Acknowledged through the lyrics, “I am a good thing and I promise you got me” Indigo’s energy matches, making the relationship equal in devotion.
As the verses continue, Indigo begins to add more elements to instrumentally elevate the song. It’s subtle at first but gradually, the additions become essential to completing the final product. The stately guitar melody before the first chorus, the collective beat pattern paired with the “ooo’s” of her harmonies make for a more aggressive emphasis on the downbeats finishing with the ultimate build-up towards the end. This mimics the similarity to how love can grow. Little by little, the small things we notice in the people we love eventually accumulate together and contribute to the love we have for them. Until the love becomes unconditional.
Honesty and purity flow through the strength of her lyricism as Indigo captures the universal feeling of just wanting to be held by the people around us. She plays into this freely and explores how it is to “simply see someone in their humanity and loving them” as Indigo states.
