As the Emmy-award-winning original series, POSE recently came to a close, fans of the show are already experiencing withdrawals from their weekly doses of the breakout cast. However, when it comes to actress MJ Rodriguez they can push those worries to the side under the moniker, Michaela Jaé the budding actress is her attention to music.

To be clear, music is nothing new for the Newark, New Jersey native as a graduate of Arts High School as well as Berkeley University’s School of Music, in her words, she “didn’t have the opportunity to explore music because her acting career took off” first on off-Broadway then premium cable. Now, working alongside Grammy-award winning producer Neal H. Pogue and Grammy-award-winning bassist Verdine White (of Earth, Wind & Fire), Michaela Jaé is making her music debut with single, “Something To Say”.

The late-70s early-80s pop-funk track is perfectly timed to intersect Pride Month as well as Black Music month. The single’s messaging is unafraid with bold instrumentation yet delivered with such a soft hand which makes it the perfect anthem for Pride Month.

When asked about the track during an interview with Jamila Mustafa of MTV’s Fresh Out Live, replied, “I think [Something To Say] is the perfect debut for me because it showcases the side of me that a lot of people didn’t get to see, and it also lets people know that I am an artist and I’ve been working on this for a long time. It’s time for me to have that moment for people to see that I’ve got the talent to sing, the talent to move and the talent to perform and make people happy,” adding, “that’s what this song is, to make others happy, to let them know that they have a voice in this world, and that no one in the universe should ever be telling you that you don’t have the right to exist. We all got something to say and I’ll be the first to say it.

This is a solid artistic start for Michaela Jaé. As a pop song, “Something To Say” doesn’t allow for her to showcase her true vocal range and the lyrics are simple at best which has everything to do with pop music (i.e. Pharrell’s “Happy”); I am looking forward to following Michaela Jaé’s journey through music.
