Pop trio ALMA

Well, it looks like pop music is heading in a new direction! New York City-based trio ALMA (made up of Alba Torremocha, Lillie McDonough, and Melissa Kaitlyn Carter) is looking to elevate the genre’s simplistic sound base with their unique DIY approach. On their latest single, “Pin In The Map” collaboratively produced by the group, Elliot Moss, Noah Kellman, Steve Xia, and Alex Rodriguez, the ladies masterfully blend soft instrumentation, worldly sounds, and interjecting monologues to birth a cinematic pop experience.

Credited to their film scoring and audio engineering backgrounds, on “Pin In The Map” vividly paints the story of heartbreak heard throughout the song’s lyrics. While there aren’t many of any other pop groups that sound like ALMA, elements of duo Sylvan Esso by way of their lead breathy lead vocals and out of the box production as well as Your Smith’s echoing harmonies and new age pop writing approach can be heard.

When asked about the inspiration behind the track the band replied, “[Pin in the Map] was written in a post-breakup haze after a trip to have dinner and watch the Superbowl with a longtime friend and college ex-boyfriend.

Later adding, “the writing process started that night on the subway home, not able to shake that feeling that time had worked it’s magic and somebody you were once so close to was now so distant. Yet, at the same time, there was an unshakable hope that this was one of those special relationships that could exist beyond norms and stand the test of time.

Give the track a listen for yourself below and don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comment section!

If this is what a loose single sounds like, I can imagine how a cohesive body of work from the trio would shake pop music.
