Los Angeles native Pearl Charles is taking no time off following the release of her 3-track EP Between Dreams. The singer and songwriter is back in the booth recording new music for her upcoming full-length album, Magic Mirror (via Kanine Records), slated to be released digitally later this year.

Although Between Dreams did a great job at showcasing Charles’ budding mixed genre sound based on the forthcoming project’s lead single, “What I Need” it was only a rough cut of her true capabilities.

The new single embeds the new Americana movement wave aiming to modernize the sound. From the classic charm in the vocals kissed with Southern twang reminiscent of Dolly Parton to the refreshing arrangement of instruments seen by acts like Courtney Barnett.

Essentially, Pearl Charles’ “What I Need” is a refined gumbo of psychedelic harmonies, 70s mod synth, stripped bass, and a few other accent markers.

In a statement, Charles shared the inspiration behind the track, “Have you ever stuck with something long after it was time to let go? [What I Need] explores this choice in terms of a breakup, though it could really be applied to any situation that is no longer serving you,” adding, “it’s the age-old story of wanting to stay in a comfortable relationship, but knowing that you have to move on for personal growth, and the fear and uncertainty that being alone will bring, even though it’s for the best.
