Listen up, Jersey has something to say! New Jersey-based producer and rapper Brainorchestra has made it crystal clear that the Garden State’s music scene is thriving and will no longer be overlooked. While the Elizabeth, NJ native rose to fame in the underground progressive beat community as a member of the FREQ Show collective, on his latest album, From The 908, Brain shows he is indeed multifaceted. From neck-breaking production to hard-hitting bars, the 14-track project has it all.
I had a chance to catch up with Brainorchestra to talk about the new waves of musical talents emerging from his home state of New Jersey, his new project ‘From The 908‘ + accompanying tour and more. Continue below to read the full interview!
You have created a name for yourself throughout the underground beat scene across the country but you are truly loved in your home state of New Jersey. A lot of artists like yourself are shining a light on the music scene here. What do you want people to know about the sonic landscape in Jersey?
“There’s a lot of great music out here. A lot of talented individuals making beats, rapping, playing instruments & combining it all at some points. It’s cool to be from an area where surrounding cities all have good art going on, more than music.”
Two projects in one year! What did we do to deserve this? Can you talk about the difference in the creative process from ‘HAVENS’ to your new project, ‘From The 908’?
” [‘Havens’] was more-so a compilation project of beats that will be spread out on multiple projects in the future (maybe). I feel like I’ve been enhancing my sound & production style so it was cool to display that. Another difference is that ‘From The 908’ is a rap / instrumental album. It was getting worked on since early 2018 so, it was another time stamp of what more is to come out of Brainorchestra.”
For the newer fans, who are just starting along their journey with you on ‘From The 908’ the idea of you rapping isn’t something to foreign but for older fans, it may be. Were you afraid to jump into the bars? Going forward can we expect a lot more 16s from you?
“You will most def expect A LOT more 16s. I wasn’t afraid at all to jump (back) into rapping. I started as a rapper at 15 years old playing local shows in Elizabeth / Newark, NJ. It’s nothing new to me & personally didn’t think hard about it. I just finally felt like I had more to say, & that my production reached a level where it satisfied me to finally write to them. I’m glad people are finding out about the beats from the rhymes, & rhymes from the beats. I just want to be the whole package haha.”
Your ‘From the 908’ tour is kicking off this week in New Jersey. That must be exciting! What can fans expect on this tour?
“Expect mad new, unreleased beats + raps as well as majority of ‘From The 908’. You’ll be getting a show from me most def – & it’s going to have that classic Brain feel. I’m not trying to change my live sets but better expand the way I can interact with everyone live with the way I already do (sonically).”

Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or digital crate-digging for hours through my favorite digital streaming platform, finding indie artists is the name then telling their story is the game.
