Monday, September 12
Rough Trade
Brooklyn, New York

Peaches (Merrill Nisker) burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cocksure rapping and groove box beats. Though she came from an underground cauldron of acoustic folk (Mermaid Café), avant-garde jazz (Fancypants Hoolum), and deconstructed noise swarms (the Shit), it wasn’t until 2000 that her fearless, political gender play truly raised heads. European trawls unearthed new admirers, and collaborations with the equally lewd Chilly Gonzales certainly fueled the fire for her first solo effort. By the time she signed with Berlin’s Kitty-Yo label and unleashed The Teaches of Peaches, her niche had already been carved out: Peaches sounded like a Penthouse Forum together with Grandmaster Flash, Shirley Manson, and Charles Manson.

LUSHLush

Tuesday, September 13
Music Hall of Williamsburg
New York City, New York

Meshing dreamy, effects-drenched guitars with airy, catchy melodies, Lush were one of the most prominent shoegaze/dream pop bands of the early ’90s. Led by guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, the British band gained a cult following within the British and American undergrounds with its first EPs, yet the group never quite attained the critical respect given to its peers My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Even so, Lush lasted longer than any other of their contemporaries (with the exception of the Boo Radleys), developing sharp pop skills as their career progressed. By the time of their final album, 1996’s Lovelife, they had converted themselves into a power pop band with dream pop overtones, which resulted in the greatest chart success of their career. That success was dealt a blow when drummer Chris Acland committed suicide in the fall of 1996, effectively bringing the band to an end.

Tim EastonTim Easton

Tuesday, September 13
World Cafe Live
Philadelphia, PA

“Tim Easton is a storyteller through and through, he’s also a student of classic pop songcraft willing to interrupt a weighty narrative with an undeniable hook” – Rolling Stone

Tim Easton remained on the fringes of the alt-country scene for much of the 90s, although by the start of the new millennium he was beginning to be talked about alongside Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Jay Farrar of Son Volt as one of the genre’s leading talents.

Bear’s DenBear's Den

Wednesday, September 14
Rough Trade
Brooklyn, New York

Taking a cue from earnest, pastoral folk-rockers like Mumford & Sons, the Avett Brothers, and Stornoway, London alt-country/indie folk trio Bear’s Den formed around the talents of Joey Haynes and ex-Cherbourg members Andrew Davie and Kev Jones. Bear’s Den honed their chops on tours with contemporaries like Of Monsters and Men, the Smoke Fairies, and Matt Corby before securing the opening slot for the Mumford’s 2012 performance at London’s massive O2 Arena. The group issued a pair of debut EPs, Without/Within and Agape, through the Communion label the following year. In 2014, the trio entered the studio with Ian Grimble to record their debut album, Islands. Released toward the end of the year, the album hit the U.K. albums chart in the Top 50 and album track “Above the Clouds of Pompeii” was nominated for an Ivor Novello award in early 2015. That year also saw the band head out in support of the release with tours across the U.S., Europe, and the U.K. At the beginning of 2016, Haynes announced he was leaving the band to spend more time with family; Jones and Davie continued on. In April, the band released a teaser trailer for their sophomore album, Red Earth & Pouring Rain. The album, produced once again by Grimble, was released in July.

Car Seat Headrestcar seat headrest

Thursday, September 15
Bowery Ballroom
New York, New York

Crafting moody and introspective lo-fi pop tunes that are melodic but structurally ambitious at once, Car Seat Headrest is the moniker used by musician and songwriter Will Toledo. Toledo grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he learned about music theory while playing in the student symphonic band in junior high and high school. Toledo majored in English in college, but he was fascinated with music, embracing an eclectic variety of artists from Radiohead, Modest Mouse, and R.E.M. to Animal Collective and Swans, and he began writing songs on his computer, using its built-in microphone and the recording software that was bundled with the machine.

THE ALBUM LEAFThe Album Leaf

Thursday, September 15
Johnny Brenda’s
Philadelphia, PA

THE ALBUM LEAF has been making its mark as a soft-spoken innovator steadily and surely since 1999. One year after forming the influential San Diego instrumental group Tristeza, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle founded THE ALBUM LEAF, a solo studio project turned full-fledged live band. The diversity of THE ALBUM LEAF’s music is second only to the diversity of the music that has inspired LaValle through the years – the artist has named everything from German Ambient/Psych bands like Can, Cluster and Harmonia to traditional mariachi music, electronic music and Brian Eno as some of his primary influences – and it’s clear that THE ALBUM LEAF is unafraid of thinking outside the box, both as an individual artist & within the larger scope of modern music.

WatskyWatsky

Thursday, September 15
The Loft
Atlanta, GA

San Francisco native George Watsky began his unconventional career as a Grand Slam Poetry champion whose clever, introspective rhymes were showcased on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on HBO. His quirky persona, coupled with his uncanny ability to spit tongue-twisting lyrics at light-speed, earned him millions of YouTube hits and an invitation to perform on the Ellen show. After Watsky independently produced a self-titled album in 2009, both his 2013 album Cardboard Castles and his recent 2014 offering All You Can Do reached #1 on the iTunes hip-hop charts, with the former peaking at #6 overall and the latter reaching #5. Watsky, performing with his live band Creme Fraiche, puts on a dynamic live performance that has earned him festival slots at San Francisco’s Outside Lands, Bumbershoot in Seattle, Rock the Bells, the Wireless Festival in London, and the 2014 Van’s Warped Tour, among many other stops in a young career that has already tallied nearly a thousand shows.

Nada SurfNada Surf

Sunday, September 18
Bowery Ballroom
Brooklyn, New York

Once in danger of being relegated to “one-hit wonder” status, Nada Surf soldiered onward after the success of 1996’s “Popular,” following up a brief residence on the Billboard charts with a slew of solid power pop albums. Founders Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar) and Daniel Lorca (bass) were longtime school friends, having studied together at the Lycée Français de New York in Upper Manhattan. After Lorca spent some time abroad in the late ’80s, the two reunited after graduation to form Because Because Because in 1991. By 1993, they had jumped ship and shifted their focus to a new project, Nada Surf, whose first two indie releases won the band a contract in Spain. They recorded an LP for the European label, only to have their original drummer quit. Ira Elliot (formerly of the Fuzztones) was brought aboard just as the group’s European deal fell through, and Nada Surf’s luck returned when their demo found its way to Ric Ocasek, who offered to produce additional sessions if Nada Surf wished to re-record the material.
