Tuesday, August 2
Sounds of Brazil
New York City, New York
With a thick and rootsy sound, but an edge that suggests she’s a Burning Spear or Mutabaruka for the 21st century, Jamaican singer and songwriter Jah9 was born Janine Cunningham in the Western rural town of Falmouth. College brought her into town, the campus introduced her to Rastafarians, and the Rastas introduced her to dub, roots reggae, and artists like dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. Taking her childhood nickname of Jah9, she became a staple of Jamaica’s progressive poetry scene, while recording demos with producer Sheldon Bernard led her to the legendary Beres Hammond. Through Hammond, she signed with Don Corleon Records in 2010 and recorded the singles “Warning” and “Keep Holding On” with producer Donovan Bennett. Her breakthrough year came in 2013 when her track “Brothers” shared a single with Chronixx and his song “Smile Jamaica” on the flipside, then her debut album, the aptly titled New Name, landed on Rory “Stone Love” Gilligan’s label, Rorystonelove. A year later she released the compilation Singles, and in 2016 she joined the VP label with the single “Bloody City.”

The Last Shadow Puppets
Tuesday, August 2
Terminal 5
New York City, New York
A Scott Walker- and David Bowie-inspired collaboration between the Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and the Rascals’ Miles Kane, the Last Shadow Puppets began when Kane’s previous band, the Little Flames, toured with the Arctic Monkeys in 2007. Already friends from prior gigs together, the pair started writing songs that spring, and headed into a French studio late that summer with producer/drummer James Ford. Additional recording, including strings courtesy of the London Metropolitan Orchestra and arranger Owen Pallett (of Final Fantasy), was completed that December…

Christopher The Conquered
Thursday, August 4
Mercury Lounge
New York City, New York
Christopher the Conquered wants you to read between the lines. That said, he’s got a damn good reason for naming his full-length debut album,I’m Giving Up On Rock & Roll [Maximum Ames Records].
“I’m not referring to music,” he explains. “It’s the idea of Rock & Roll as a metaphor for misrepresenting yourself. Living behind a mask or a façade is not a healthy way to live. That’s what I’m giving up on. People love Rock & Roll, and I love Rock & Roll. However, the person I am onstage is also the person I am offstage.”

Avers
Thursday, August 4
Mercury Lounge
New York City, New York
With four songwriters, four singers, and 11 tracks of guitar-saturated rock & roll, Avers’ second album, Omega/Whatever, is proof that there’s strength in numbers. The record shines new light on a band that made its first splash with 2014’s Empty Light. Avers supported that debut release by leaving their hometown of Richmond, VA, and crisscrossing the country on tour, opening for bands like Foo Fighters and J. Roddy Walston along the way. They made a national splash during the 2015 SXSW Festival, too, with everyone from Esquire Magazine to The Daily Beast listing them as one of the week’s breakout bands.

Elliphant
Thursday, August 4
Rough Trade NYC
Brooklyn, New York
Presented by Steve Madden Summer Music Series
Blending pop, EDM, dancehall, and rap, Stockholm, Sweden’s Ellinor Olovsdotter became Elliphant after traveling to the U.K. with a dubstep sound system and discovering London’s urban music scene. She released her debut single, “Tekkno Scene,” a kinetic track that drew favorable comparisons to M.I.A. and Major Lazer’s music, in 2012; the song also appeared in the video game FIFA 13. Later that year, the singles “Ciant Hear It” and “Down on Life” arrived, with the music video for the latter drawing praise from Katy Perry. In 2013, Elliphant released her self-titled debut EP, signed with Dr. Luke’s label, and began work on her debut album. That October, the full-length A Good Idea, which included collaborations with Niki & the Dove and featured the single “Down on Life,” was released. The album earned Elliphant a nomination for the 2014 P3 Gold Award for Newcomer of the Year. In April 2014, she released the Look Like You Love It EP, which featured collaborations with Diplo, TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, Skrillex, and Dr. Luke, via Mad Decent. 2015’s eclectic Living Life Golden reunited her with Skrillex, Sitek, and Dr. Luke, while introducing new colleagues including Azealia Banks, Big Freedia, and Twin Shadow’s George Lewis, Jr.

Donavon Frankenreiter
Thursday, August 4
Bowery Ballroom
New York City, New York
Before launching a solo career as the protégé of Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter began his professional life as a surfer. Born in Southern California on December 10, 1972, he landed a sponsorship with Billabong as a young teenager and moved to Hawaii when he was 14. There, he rented a home from the parents of Jack Johnson, a fellow surfer with an untapped musical talent. The two became fast friends, learning guitar together and hanging out between trips to the beach. Music was always a hobby for Frankenreiter, who began playing guitar in a local rock band called Sunchild during his late teens, but it wasn’t until 2002 that he grew confident enough to try a solo career. Meanwhile, Johnson’s musical career had taken a meteoric leap, and he was starting his own Brushfire Records label. Frankenreiter reached out to his old friend, who released Frankenreiter’s self-titled debut in May 2004. Johnson also made a guest appearance on the record, along with G. Love and Koool G Murder of the Eels.

Corbu
Friday, August 5
Mercury Lounge
New York City, New York
Corbu is a lucid dream you never want to wake up from. A memory of faded colors. Warm light behind a neon sculpture. The green hue of the sky before an afternoon storm. A game of hide and seek. The thoughts you have that don’t make sense, moments before you fall asleep. All of these seemingly mundane yet beautifully ordinary everyday experiences exist inside the universe that is Corbu and their debut LP, ‘Crayon Soul,’ due for release in spring 2016.

Frankie Cosmos
Saturday, August 6
Bowery Ballroom
New York City, New York
Daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, Greta Kline began writing songs and exploring the independent recording scene when she was introduced to a small community of encouraging artists and scenesters at Purchase College in the early 2010s. By 2012, Kline had dropped out of college herself, focusing on shows and recording under the name Frankie Cosmos. Highly prolific, Kline tapped into the quirky vibes of the Sidewalk Cafe anti-folk scene, which had given birth to the Moldy Peaches a decade before, as well as the D.I.Y. ethos of K Records. Her songs, often short and melodic, were released mostly online in various, sometimes monthly albums. Following literally dozens of home-recorded, self-released collections, Zentropy appeared in 2014, representing Kline’s first studio album, completed with the help of a full band. She soon signed with Bayonet Records, which issued the four-track Fit Me In EP a year later. The second Frankie Cosmos LP was written as the songwriter transitioned to her twenties. Titled Next Thing, it arrived in 2016.
