What do you get when you blend together the films Project X and Queen & Slim? Producer, DJ, rapper, and singer UNIIQU3’s official video for single, “Microdosing”!

The self-produced track off of her latest EP Heartbeats (Local Action Records) is a glimpse into the Jersey Club Kween’s more vulnerable side. When she’s not providing the soundtrack to some of the hottest dance parties around the world, the recording artist likes to keep a rather low profile including the details of her love life.

Set to her signature vibrant uptempo sound, EP Heartbeats released last year gave fans a peek into her romantic ups and downs. On “Microdosing”, UNIIQU3 details a failed relationship in which her partner refused to take in all facets of the entertainer hence the title of the track. In the official video, directed by Nimi Hendrix (of Secret Society Motion Pictures), viewers are taken on a ride of their lives. With a cinematic depiction of the ultimate rave love story set to the backdrop of one of the most popular clubs in New York City, Nowadays. Hendrix does an amazing job capturing Black love, rave culture, and the inclusivity often not showcased in the mainstream coverage of dance music as a whole.

In a lust-filled scene, UNIIQU3 passionately embraces her on-screen love interest played by model, Hunter Bryant.

I had a chance to catch up with UNIIQU3 to discuss the creative process and inspiration behind the video to which she replied, “this video is inspired by Requiem for a Dream. It’s a heavy movie about what can happen if you give in to your vices, you get addicted. The director Nimi Hendrix presented the idea to me after hearing my song which is about being addicted to my love.”

“A lot of work went into it. It was my first grand production. Honestly, being an independent artist is hard and I’ve had really bad experiences making music videos [in the past]. I mean just last year, I made 7 day weekends in lockdown off my iPhone lol. I tapped a few friends for this and I’m so happy I did,” adding, “I was honestly so appreciative of my community supporting this because it was new for me to show my artistry on camera.”

Those friends include Pauli Cakes (founder and head curator of XCakes Rave) and celebrity stylist Mazurabate (Coi Leray). “We shot this video in the freezing cold. The rave scene was curated by my friend Pauli. I was styled by Mazurabate. I wanted people to see/experience what I do. The real rave scene filled with queer and melanated bodies and I also wanted to showcase what Black love looks like for us Club Kids,” UNIIQU3 said ending with, “just know everything was raw and authentic and I cannot wait to keep telling stories with my music in the future.”
