It’s been six years since Tricky’s last solo studio album. This week, Different When It’s Silent, will break Tricky’s musical hiatus. The forthcoming body of work marks Tricky’s return in the eyes of fans. But on a personal level, Different When It’s Silent signifies Tricky’s journey through grief.
Back in 2019, Tricky’s daughter tragically and suddenly died away. The passing pushed Tricky into a deep isolation.
“To be honest with you, since my daughter died, I want to work,” said Tricky in a statement shared with ENVERT. “I want to do stuff. But all the press being on camera, everything just changed when she died. I’ve never been a pop star as such, but that made me even more want to go in the background.”
Although Tricky released his 14th studio album, Fall to Pieces, shortly after his daughter’s death, on the project the musician was a blur of himself.
“I was in pieces when I made that album,” Tricky confessed. “It was almost like I had to get that out of me. And then after that, I was more worried about Marta’s album or the label.”
He continued: “So, I wouldn’t say I was reluctant to release music under my own name. But I wasn’t that interested, to be honest. I didn’t have the motivation. Releasing an album under your name, you get to do certain stuff. I can bring out a side project with no press, no photographs, no videos, no tour, nothing at all. It’s easy.”
Now, six years removed from the tragedy, Tricky is ready to create music from a place of hope.
“Emotionally, I’m saying I’m ready to start my life again,” Tricky added. “I’m looking forward to touring. I want to record. I was emotionally paralyzed. Now I’m moving again. And sonically, this lets people know: if you have your own sound, you’ll never go out of fashion. When genres come and go, you’ll still be there. This album says that–nothing sounds like it.”
