London-based singer Ego Ella May pulls out all the stops for her second single, “Tonight I’m Drowning” off the critically acclaimed debut album, Honey For Wounds (via Upper Room Records). The track produced by Wu-Lu is a refreshingly modern fusion between blues and jazz which May’s vocals serve as the perfect compliment. Although the track is lyrically short, what it lacks in writing is compensated by the grandiose live instrumentation which the official video directed by Daniel Aremu emphasizes.
The cinematic visual features the rising UK vocalist alongside her band comprised of Wu-Lu, Andrew Ashong, Sam Michnik, and Theo Croker in the ultimate virtual performance. Aremu manages to keep the video masterfully simplistic yet detailed enough to require multiple watches in order to truly grasp the story being presented.
The video opens with dancer Shanika Wallace delivering a powerful liturgical-esque performance to May’s heartwrenching lyrics. Between the cool tone lighting treatment representing a love turned cold, visual Easter eggs such as the silk background to mimic the flow of water, to the tasteful cameo of May and bandmates director Aremu has created an intoxicating masterpiece.
If the video serves as any indication of what fans can expect from her live shows in 2021, it’s no wonder shows are beginning to sell out across the pond.
