Absence makes the heart grow fonder. For six years, Thundercat fans have patiently awaited a follow-up to 2020’s It Is What It Is.
Although the Grammy Award-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist has actively released one-off records and created music with his long list of collaborators, supporters have desperately begged for a cohesive body of work from Thundercat. This spring, that project will hit streaming platforms.
Today (January 29), Thundercat announced his forthcoming studio album, Distracted. On April 3, the 15-track project will satisfy the musical thirst of fans. In a statement shared with ENVERT, Thundercat spoke about the inspiration behind his upcoming album.
“Sometimes you need to be distracted to focus in a different way,” said Thundercat.
As for what he hopes listeners will take away from the project, Thundercat’s mission is simple.
“Just enjoy it and have fun, and just know that the struggle is real and changes shape, but just to keep pushing forward,” chimed Thundercat. “[You have] permission to be confused. To be tired. To be, well, distracted — and still make something beautiful out of the noise.”
The first taste of this self-described battle “between overstimulation and introspection comes by way of its groovy lead single “I Did This To Myself” featuring Lil Yachty.
On “I Did This To Myself,” both Thundercat and Lil Yachty take accountability for the instability in their romantic lives. As the pair outlines their relentless pursuits of self-proclaimed “baddies,” they admit that such pursuits, which are rooted in lust, very seldom produce long-lasting love.
