The Gits’ 2005 Documentary Is Heading To Theaters And Streaming Ahead Of Its 20th Anniversary

Nearly 23 years have passed since The Gits‘ frontwoman Mia Zapata‘s tragic death. The late punk rock icon’s legacy has long had a profound impact on Seattle’s music scene.

While rock lovers from Washington are familiar with the band’s influential sound and Zapata’s infectious vocals, those around the country will soon be reminded. To celebrate the documentary’s 20th anniversary, The Gits, will hit theaters and streaming.

This winter, the 2005 Kerri O’Kane-directed documentary, The Gits, will return to select theaters in Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota.

The first in-person screening will be held on November 6 at Nitehawk in Brooklyn, New York. The PhilaMoca in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will host the next screening on November 12. Then, in January 2026, screenings will be held in Minnesota. On January 14, 2026, Minneapolis’ Sound Unseen/Trylon Cinema will host a screening of The Gits. Shortly after, on January 18, 2026, the Pop’s Art Theater in Rochester will host the screening. Find more information or to view the full screening schedule, click here.

However, if you are unable to attend an in-person screening of the documentary, fans can access The Gits on the streaming service Veeps. The documentary will stream on December 16th at 8 p.m. For live or on-demand access to The Gits via Veeps, click here.

The Gits is described as: “With amplified visuals, rare audio, and a renewed urgency in its message, The Gits is more than a documentary — it’s a timeless testament to artistic legacy, community, and resilience. Featuring electrifying live performances, rare archival footage, and candid interviews with bandmates, peers, and friends like Joan Jett, Kathleen Hanna, members of 7 Year Bitch, and more, The Gits delivers an intimate and unflinching portrait of a band whose sound captured both ferocity and vulnerability. Rather than framing Zapata solely as a tragic figure, the film celebrates her as a visionary artist whose voice still resonates more than three decades later.”
