Fans of indie punk bands better prepare themselves for the arrival of the Shutups! Likened to Car Seat Headrest and Modern Baseball, Shutups is sure to be their next favorite group.
The Oakland, CA duo has released the official video for single, “Death From Behind” in July as a precursor to forthcoming EP 5. The song stands well on its own, but the video adds hilarity, absurdism, and an overwhelming message to not take yourself too seriously.
The track is a potent mix of casual melodies and chugging instruments. Vocalist Hadley spits out, tosses around, and nonchalantly delivers straightforward lyrics. The drums are dampened, marching along behind a repeated dissonant rhythm guitar. The tune playfully bounces from blasé verses to introspective interludes, culminating in its pounding chorus.
Shutups’ accompanying music video supports the carefree nature of the recording. The three minutes showcase our duo preparing for a knightly duel. As they wander the streets and text each other death threats in quintessential millennial fashion, medieval musicians appear in the background. From flute-playing monks to robed figures in the sky, there is no limit to these nonsensical caricatures, and the absurdity does not end there. The song bellows its choruses while the knights mediate, wander through public parks, and even partake in some recreational drug use. Our duo ultimately decides to postpone their fight with a final text reading “tomorrow ur dead”.
“Death From Behind” is one of the more creative and enjoyable visual accomplishments to come out of the 2020 punk scene. Shutups has made it clear that listeners of all genres should be on high alert for the impressive EP they are sure to deliver this fall.
