Regarded as one of the most influential young poets on the Internet, Jasmine Mans, follows the success of viral hit “Footnotes for Kanye” a poem dedicated to rapper Kanye West with “Fire”. Rather intimate in nature, “Fire” is a coming of age story of the modern age millennium Black woman. Torn between the battle of a peaceful childhood to the brashness and sometimes unbearable nature of Black women adulthood. Director Curtis Taylor and Castle of Dreams production team did an outstanding job of translating the sense of helplessness and hollow emotion, Mans’ words convey.
In the piece, Mans asks herself and the viewing audience a serious of thought provoking question which she later answers.
“What do you think will happen
When you set the black girl on fire?
Her ashes will decorate the lungs of all the men
who tried to take her from herself
soot will pour from their mouths
and we will watch them choke”
– Mans, Jasmine
