It Might Be Time To Take A ‘Close’ Look At Alt-Pop Duo Playyard

There are countless college students right now with the dream of starting a band that’ll make it big, but Henry Morris and Michael Sack are one pair talented enough to pull it off. The Santa Barbara-based musicians under the stage name Playyard met when they were set up to be freshman year roommates and they’ve been making music ever since.

Their unique collaboration, as well as talented devotion to the music, creates songs that are youthfully fun yet relatable for their listeners. Their most recent single “Close,” gives listeners a glimpse into a past relationship. As the duo explores the feelings that come with an intimate loss, listeners can feel the reflective confessions of a failed relationship.

In collaboration with Łaszewo, the track’s pop synths and singable lyrics beg for summertime anthem material aesthetically similar to that of Calvin Harris. As Playyard wonders, “were we really that close,” listeners gain a danceable chorus whose lyrics we can understand in this mass moment of change, anticipation and reflection.

When describing the track Morris expressed, “as we all get ready for our own version of a ‘hot girl summer’ there’s going to be so much reflection on our past year in COVID and what we’re leaving behind as our lives go back to what they were before.”

If this time is anything, it’s a reckoning for young people whose lives have been turned upside down. “Close,” is able to capture that feeling and spit it back out with an amazing tune to go along with it.
