Synth-pop singer and songwriter Onlychild (previously known by The Ready Set, Nekokat) is without a doubt the chameleon of indie-pop music. His latest single, “Thank Me Later” is a revival of late 00’s dubstep and the best of electronic pop.
Onlychild welcomes listeners the way he knows best; layers upon layers of drums, synthesizers, and his own vocal prowess make for a catchy tune that is upbeat and ideal for letting off steam.
Don’t let the track fool you into thinking everything’s fine because it soon becomes evident that it isn’t. Onlychild is angry and he is retaliating. With lyrics such as “used to be so scared love was lethal but I’ve taken too much to feel it” and “I would rather keep you out of my head than under my skin,” listeners are quickly made aware of the track’s true intentions.
“Holding back your tears to say you love me / but when you get nothing you call me a traitor,” becomes the track’s anthem amidst the chorus. In detailing how too many bad experiences can turn people into cynic, Onlychild shares the heartbreaking tale of self-isolating loners. To be more specific, those who push people away in an attempt to protect themselves.
The accompanying music video for the track features captures the track lyrical symbolism in a clever way. Mirrors and reflections are a central part to the video’s aesthetic, as well as a tall, armored creature who follows Onlychild around on a journey across the forest. This creature is there not to scare but to protect him. Onlychild bravely summons it and turns to it for comfort.
Turns out, the creature is simply a reflection of himself.
