Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or…
Clearly, there’s something in the Florida water! Many of R&B’s rising talents are sprouting up across the sunshine state. Nomad Music Group’s singer Nia Ray is one of these promising new acts. Following the release of her debut 6-track project, What’s Love Anyways in October, the Miami songwriter has begun to build a name for herself amongst sultry music listeners.
Her latest video for the double-sided single, “Need More (Comfortable)” produced by DJ Luna continues along with the EP’s theme of love languages. The visual directed by Meli G is split into two separate acts. In the first half, Ray is shown as a young woman with no deserve to find a deeper romantic connection measuring love strictly on transactional value as the lyrics mention “The City Girls mindset”.
In the latter half, Ray shows a softer side, one of a dedicated partner who’s love isn’t appreciated. From lack of physical touch, frequent petty arguments, to infidelities. Director Meli G highlights these opposing views with a play on the color scale transitions. From opening the visual in grayscale to represent void of emotion, following into an array of color to represent the happy medium, then finally flashes of ivories to representing being pushed into coldness by a romantic partner.
I reached out to Ray to asked about the inspiration behind the track, to which she replied, “[Need More] is really about not receiving enough from your partner, whether it be asking for more before you get into the relationship, or after you’ve been at it for a while.”
Later adding, “the video takes you through a few different scenes, the first ones showing a girl who’s been hurt by love, and now hurts others just to get what she wants. As you reach the transitional point of the song and video you start to see inside of a relationship where they’ve just gotten too comfortable, or maybe the love has run its course altogether.”
