While lovers across the world were celebrating Valentine’s Day, pop newbie Nari took a moment to reflect on just how emotionally disparaging the pursuit of love can truly be. On her new single, “Lower My Expectations” (released on Park The Van), the Bay area native chronologicals the disappointment she’s faced in her own dating life.
The “anti-love” refurbished 1950s jukebox tune pulls in traditional Hawaiian folk and new age bluegrass (heard in the tracks pacing) as Nari’s delicate vocals gently crash up against the guitar riffs. Contrary to past releases such as “Pony” instead of sternly singing the song’s lyrics, Nari softens her projection which creates a hollowed effect which is followed by a robot-like chorus. This serves the track’s theme well to demonstrate the emptiness left in love’s absence. Nari’s corky use of a spice shaker mimics maracas that in turn add an element of distraction symbolizing how love’s pursuit can knock you out of balance. “Lower My Expectation” is a mild cautionary tale of mediocre romantic pursuit you should avoid engaging in.
When asked about the inspiration behind the song she shared, “I had gone on a couple of dates with a guy who I thought was a pretty great guy, and one day he asked me out and was 40 minutes late,” continuing, “any sane person would’ve left after like 15 minutes but I sat there and waited on him for that time. I felt extremely stupid and every time after that, he let me down.”
Later adding, “since then I’ve been pretty self-aware when I was expecting too much out of someone too early or if I was lowering my standards and expectations just to have someone who will stick around.”
