Alternative-indie band Moxie brings their A-game on their sophomore album, Flow of Color. The 11-track project is oozing of pop jazz sounds mixed with the grunge only a thick drum groove and heavy bass line can supply. With rhythm guitarist and lead singer Rei Kimura’s signature emotion evoking deep tones and peak vocal inflections, Moxie has mastered their unique sound.
Songs such as “Hard To Be” are quick to stick in the listener’s head, and can’t help but get an audience dancing. The Vermont rockers describe this new chapter of their musical growth as “…taking longer and more complex routes for a more intriguing and deep listen,” as they present a more polished sound and mixes,“…still certainly sounds like the Moxie our listeners know.”
Kimura reflects on the songs she chose to write for the album stating, “this album is a collection of my experiences during [the last] two years. Falling in and out of love, learning to let go and move on, navigation through insecurities, identity, nostalgia, and loss of innocence.”
Flow of Color toys with themes of young adulthood which not only gives listeners a sense of universal experiences with heightened sound quality that highlights the group’s ever-growing musical talent.
Recorded in a “basement-turned-studio” and engineered by the band themselves, the crisp guitar lines and earworm melodies come through with booming clarity on the final product. Whether you’re looking to float through a song like “Days Away” or roll down the car window and shout the lyrics to “Frank”, Flow of Color has it all.
