From the suburbs of Ottawa, Canada singer and songwriter Mikayla Menzies releases a storm of a song documenting the reality of grief. Through her poetic lyricism and raw vulnerability, on new single “Mess” produced by Eric Eggleston, Menzies dives deep into the state of her mental well-being after losing a loved one.
Cutting through the surface level of emotions as she sings, “I’m trying to make conversation… / nobody here knows I’m in pain”. This indicates Menzies prefers to keep her feelings to herself rather than to burden those she’s around. The days start to deluge into a sea of gray dullness where Menzies becomes numb to any external forces at the extent of her sorrow. The gripping emotions of isolation clouds her mind triggering unhealthy vices as the days begin to blur together.
There’s no hiding from these feelings and the song’s production highlights this. The tempo of “Mess” is slow and aching, almost like it’s dragging out the experience. The minimalistic mix of instruments used keeps things simple and steady. In contrast to the fragility of her mindset, Menzie’s vocals are strong and unbreakable. The hurt in her voice is apparent but that’s what makes it authentic.
Menzies’ greatest strength thus far in her career has been her ability to write about her feelings unapologetically. Because of this, Menzies is able to find the light within her music, turning her bleak days into colorful ones. “Mess” brings comfort to those who are experiencing loss and that it’s necessary to let that sense of grief play out.
