If you are a true lover of great R&B music you need to check out recording artist Maya Milan! Milan has opened up for acts such as K. Michelle and Wale just to name a few. Her list of accomplishments does not stop there, she’s even had the opportunity to perform during the 2012 Presidential campaign. With a musical resume like that how could you not be impressed?!
On, Thursday, July 30th, Milan performed her newest single “FUN” at one of Brooklyn, New York’s hottest event venue’s Milk River. Prior to the songstress’ performance I had the chance to speak with her about her Maryland roots, upcoming EP and much more. Continue below to read the full interview.
The #NewArtistShowcase was brought to you by Timothy Marshall Enterprises and Marshall Gras Entertainment. The #NewArtistShowcase was hosted budding Brooklyn comedian, Majah Hype.
You’re latest single Fun is blowing up on all e-music stores including iTunes, can you tell me a little bit about your vision going into Fun?
“The vision I had going into “Fun” was to create a ladies’ anthem that girls around the world could relate to. This record embodies GIRL POWER in which I am a strong advocate for, and also gives the girls something to listen to while getting dolled up to go out! I’m glad that people are so fond of this feel good track!! #WeJustWannaHaveFun.”
Recently you were invited to perform at the UniverSoul Circus, how did that amazing opportunity come about?
“Booking the gig for the Universoul Circus was a total blessing! I happened to be in rehearsal when Angie Ange (radio personality at 93.9 WKYS) heard the record and thought that it would fit perfectly as an opening act for the show. Then, next thing you know I’m at the circus.”
The Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia area is known for the unique genre that is GoGo. How do you stay true to your sound as an artist while blending some of the music you grew up listening to?
“Honestly, I embrace my GoGo roots 100 percent. As I grow as an artist I find it easier to tap into gogo influences and make it my own by incorporating R&B and a splash of pop. It’s nothing more important than being yourself and I appreciate the fact that I can be myself and still respect the culture of my hometown.”
When can fans expect a full length project? Will there be any guest appearances from other artists? Guest production?
“You can expect “Milan Mode: The Birth” EP sometime in 2016. There are no set dates as of yet, but it will be worth the wait.”
What does the future hold for Maya Milan?
“The future holds no limits! I am on a journey right now and enjoying every waking moment of it. Life has its ups and downs but I appreciate the grind and every struggle, because it’s shaping me into the person I want to be. My mother always said to turn your adversity into power and I made a vow that no matter how hard it gets I won’t give up on my dreams. At the end of the day, the true hope for my future is to create timeless records and let the music speak for itself. I want to connect to people through song and share my story with the world.”
