Margo Price is shaking off all unwarranted critiques. Well, at least that is what her latest song suggests. The country music superstar has something to get off her chest on her new single, “Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down.”
The bouncy and unapologetic record serves as the first taste for Price’s forthcoming studio album, Hard Headed Woman (due out on August 29).
As Price sings, “All the cocaine in existence couldn’t keep their nose out of my business,” the message behind “Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down” is clear—harsh judgment and mistreatment will be called out.
Co-written with Jeremy Ivey, Kris Kristofferson, and Rodney Crowell, “Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down” pays homage to two pop culture moments. In a statement, Price revealed the song’s title “originates from a call for resistance in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.”
As for the inspiration behind the tune, Price credits that to a message “[Kristofferson] whispered to Sinéad O’Connor when she was booed on stage at a Bob Dylan anniversary concert.”
