With new tune Sucker, self-described twang-heavy dream-pop star Madeline Kenney gives fans the first taste of her upcoming album, Sucker’s Lunch (via Carpark Records).

A long and winding song, Sucker describes the overwhelming feeling of the weight of failure in adulthood. Kenney’s musicianship is supported by the members of Wye Oak and brings the vocal talent of Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner onto this track, making it a duet to remember.

Sucker’s Lunch set to drop on July 31st will be Kenney’s 3rd full length release.

Sucker intricately balances hazy instrumental moments and thoughtful vocal passages, wrapping its heavy and somber arms around listeners. While Kenney’s unique vocal sound is one of her biggest attractions, it is surprisingly not the focus of the semi-title track.

Instead, she and Wagner work with the instruments to paint a colorful portrait of a woman reflecting on the life she’s built and her happiness, or lack thereof, with it. Their voices support each other in this delicate dance of a shared sadness singing, “when it’s all said and done / I’ll make another / pour my seventh cup of coffee / I’m the sucker”.

Wagner’s low and prolifically graveled sound makes Kenney’s clear singing style pop even more. The horn and guitar lines are short, intricate, and are sure to earworm themselves into listeners’ memories to be sung for days after. The track is just a sneak peek of the magic Kenney will most surely be releasing in late July with Sucker’s Lunch
