This spring, Lekan will travel around the country serenading audiences as a supporting act on Ari Lennox’s Vacancy Tour. But before the “Make It Right” singer officially packs his bags, he wanted to treat fans to a new track.
After days of teasing followers online with enticing snippets, today (March 13), Lekan shared his latest single, “Safety.” Produced by longtime collaborator Bonxu as well as TSB, “Safety” takes a sledgehammer to the nearly impenetrable emotional wall preventing folks from stepping into romance’s sanctuary.
Co-written with Grammy Award-winning duo BaeRose (Dana Victoria ‘BaeBae‘ Portalatin and Mariah Rose ‘MRose‘ Martinez), “Safety” is the expansion of Lekan’s sonic signature. Among tender lyrics and an intensely measured vocal performance, Lekan amplifies his tried and true pocket with dynamic background vocals to deepen the song’s heartfelt message.
“[I here you], I swear / [I see you], So clear / [I’ll save you when you have nowhere] / Oh, pray for you, baby / Make a way for you, baby / Just know I’ll hold your hand through the process / I’ll talk you through it / Ain’t no problem / All that you need, girl, I got you / Yeah, yeah / I promise I ain’t trying to preach to you / But I can make you a believer / Just let my love reach you,” sings Lekan [complimented by Lauren Kennedy’s backing vocals].
With “Safety,” Lekan is administering a test to those who confidently proclaim they are ready for love. Yet, sadly, this exercise in trust is an exam those left jaded in the past will refuse to sit for.
Lekan acknowledges this script may have been used by manipulators in the past. But his actions will be the defining fact to prove that is where the similarities end.
In an Instagram post announcing the song’s release, Lekan gushed about the record. “This one means a lot to me,” he wrote. “May it meet you wherever you are.”
