Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or…
Last year was a whirlwind for rising R&B crooner Lekan. Not only did the “Pray For Me” singer release his revered EP So You Know, but Lekan also joined Tems on the road as her Born In The Wild Tour’s special guest.
This year, on the other hand, Lekan has kept a relatively low profile. But Lekan’s back with new music, and his new single “Make It Right” was well worth the wait.
Believe it or not, in just a few short years, Lekan has already locked down his sonic signature. From his 2023 debut, “Familiar,” to today’s “Make It Right,” Lekan has found a way to unpack his complex emotional experiences into singular, silky soundtracks.
With the help of producers Hollywood Cole and Bonxu, and songwriting partner Tiara Thomas, on “Make It Right,” Lekan exposed yet another layer of inner emotional complexity.
Typically, the audience bears witness to Lekan’s unfiltered conversations with God. Although “Make It Right” contains those same elements of intimacy, Lekan’s faith is clearly evident in his romantic pursuits.
“I must admit, I don’t be f*cking with nobody for real / My life’s already hard to manage as it is / Been chasing dreams so much I never could commit / It is what it is / It makes me sick, you found somebody when I didn’t take it serious / Last night I hit, can’t lie I miss you / Wondering if this is something we might try again,” sings Lekan.
The tale of a rolling stone musician is one that has been well-trodden within R&B. Still, Lekan manages to draw listeners in on “Make It Right.” Yes, the record’s production is modern, but Lekan’s warm vocal tone invites an air of transparency that you can’t help root for.
Lyrically, “Make It Right” is a Hail Mary for a romantic refresh. Vocally, “Make It Right” is Lekan guiding himself through a troubling pattern of behavior. Presently, things are grim for Lekan, and all he has to light the path is unwavering faith.
“Make It Right” is Lekan doing what he does best—dressing up unfiltered honesty with punching production and sultry sonics.
Back in April, Lekan hit the Spotify studios to record a cover of The Internet’s “Girl.” Still, “Make It Right” marks Lekan’s first original release of the year.

Whether I'm popping in to an open mic night or digital crate-digging for hours through my favorite digital streaming platform, finding indie artists is the name then telling their story is the game.
