Award-winning Gospel recording artist and social activist, Lecrae, is teaming up with Prison Fellowship to boldly declare, “a prison sentence should not equal a death sentence.”
In the wake of COVID-19, prison populations are being hit hard. While the “free world” has taken numerous safety precautions including non-essential business shutdowns, social distancing, and for some states legally enforced quarantine, this luxury is not afforded to prisoners.
As of yesterday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons reports 1,353 inmates and 282 staff have recovered from their contraction of the virus. While a total of cases nationwide has not yet been released.
“These are people that need love and encouragement, that the world kind of forgets about. They’ve done things that are dishonorable…but God still loves them so, so do I,” says Lecrae.
The Bring Restoration: To Our Prison Population collaborative initiative between Lecrae and Prison Fellowship is a call-to-action that seeks assistance from the free population. The ask is for residents to contact their elected officials in the hope of securing their pledge to support a provision to the COVID-19 response bill. That provision includes “measures to prevent and respond to COVID-19 outbreaks in correction facilities” as well as “[ensuring] those with a criminal record have access to reentry services”.
In the official statement released by Reach Records regarding the initiative states, “the consequences of COVID-19 have been particularly dangerous among those in prisons and jails where close quarters have resulted in a devastating spread of this disease. Limiting the use of the incarceration right now is a matter of life and death.”
