The wait for a new studio album from KIRBY is nearly over. After dropping singles “The Man” and “Thick N Country” featuring Akeem Ali, KIRBY announced her forthcoming studio album, Miss Black America.
But the full-length release won’t hit streaming platforms until later this month. So, for now, KIRBY has shared the title track of the upcoming project featuring fellow Mississippi native BIG K.R.I.T.
On “Miss Black America,” the duo, through poignant lyrics, paint a picture of their vision for Black America.
“I made a million and I never went to Harvard / I told my daddy he gone have a wealthy daughter / Blacker the berry melanin my Alma mater / Oooo wiii you’s a bad mother shut your mouth / And I won’t rest until a black face owning Gucci / I see the future and Wakanda ain’t a movie,” sings KIRBY.
Later on the song, K.R.I.T. raps, “We don’t play no games with no racist or no lames / This ain’t Chess or Checkers / Check your chest up / You won’t be the same / Country folk Intelligent like by far / Ebonics was the start of it all / Had our own language despite they complaining / We built and sustained it you couldn’t understand it mane / I ain’t got time for the haters and the baiters talking down on the south.”
But in the visualizer directed by Devin Blakely, KIRBY and K.R.I.T. take things further by reshaping the American fabric, delivering their take on the First Black Presidential family in their image.
In a statement shared with ENVERT, KIRBY discussed the inspiration behind its official visualizer.
“Traditionally dressed in red, white, and blue, and posed in front of a perfectly mowed lawn and a ‘White House’ styled mansion, the symbolism is layered and poignant,” said KIRBY. “Instead of traditional bright white smiles, each member of the family is wearing a gold grill. Begging the question, ‘Do my grill, hair texture, braids, and jewelry make me any less American?’ Any less worthy of the highest point of office in our nation?'”
She continued: “If indeed, our first Black family had adorned themselves with grills and braids while in office, would their perception or reach be the same? Why are certain expressions of black culture acceptable while others signal alarm? With ‘Miss Black America’ we seek to deconstruct, juxtapose, and challenge these stereotypes, all while showcasing the beauty of the Black Southern family with dignity.”
As for the album’s full vision, KIRBY says, “[‘Miss Black America’ is] an album about growing up in Mississippi and understanding how the fight of your ancestors, the love of your family, the blood on the land, and the joy of the Sunday choir shaped how you see the world.”
