Although, for the third consecutive year rap music continues to be the most popular genre according to streaming numbers; there’s no denying its root influence, jazz music, is undergoing a resurgence.

This rebirth is thanks in part to the wave of instrumentalists, producers, composers, and vocalists that have taken up the mantle to introduce the root of so many other musical expressions to the younger generation. At the forefront of the pack is none other than pianist Kiefer and saxophonist Braxton Cook

Since the pair’s first collaborative track “Pariah (Kiefer Remix)” in 2017 (off Cook’s project Somewhere In Between: Remixes & Outtakes presented in partnership with Fresh Selects) fans have demanded they work together again and their wish is finally coming true with the announcement of their ‘They Already Know’ co-headlining tour this October.

Fresh off the release of his new multi-genre EP Black Mona Lisa (via Nettwerk Music Group), we spoke with the Emmy Award winner about how the tour came to be.

“We did a show at SxSW for Stones Throw that went over really well,” says Cook adding, “then we scheduled a few sessions at Kiefer’s house in LA. The first session we made 2 really great ideas that turned into songs in just a matter of hours. It was at that point we started discussing potentially releasing our songs as a 2-pack EP, making visuals, and potentially going on tour together. We connected our agents together and everything came together effortlessly after that.”

With two fresh new singles “Why Not” and “Montara” (with Luke Titus and Pera Krstajic) of his own and a budding podcast Approachable Music, Kiefer has kept his pulse on the genre whether’s his making music or interviewing fellow musicians, Cook ensures this tour is going to be one to remember.

Fans can expect to hear a set of Kiefer’s original music in a trio format, a full set of my own music with my quartet/quintet, then I may pop up on Kiefer’s set to perform our new tunes,” says Cook.

For new fans of the composer, Cook firmly adds, “I will definitely be playing music from my new project [Black Mona Lisa] and we will definitely have merch for sale!

The intimate 5-city ‘You Already Know’ tour will kick off in Washington, D.C. will serve as a unique sonic experience of both highly revered musicians’ works in a way never heard before.
