In 2022, K. Michelle announced her retirement from R&B music. The following year, the Grammy Award-nominated singer and songwriter dropped I’m The Problem. Since then, fans have been introduced to and grown to love her country music persona, Puddin.
This week, after years of anticipation K. Michelle’s debut country album, Jesus & Whiskey, which was produced by Kristian Bush (of Sugarland) will hit streaming platforms.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, K. Michelle spoke about her departure from R&B and entry into country.
“Being a Tennessee girl, [country] is my first genre of choice, and I was always told because of other reasons, I couldn’t sing that,” Michelle, who previously found success as an R&B artist, tells PEOPLE. “When it came down to it, I am a country singer. It’s new to the world, but to everyone around me, they know it’s my whole life, so it’s time to do what it is I do, and I’m really excited about it.”
