Toronto native, singer Jenny Palacio wasted no time this year planting her foot in the ground as a new artist. With three singles released in preparation for her solo debut EP, her latest single, “Convenient” sticks true to her synth-pop sound with a modern alternative twist.

Convenient” fully displays Jenny’s raw talent while immersing listeners into her own illusion. The official video for the track emulates what it feels like to become engulfed in the past, the vicious cycle of what was and in turn what could have been. Similar to watching these memories while underwater, the images are distorted and in this case, romanticized. Hallucinations flash as the camera goes in and out of focus. These optical illusions seem to feel nostalgic as they play mind tricks. Through a dual-toned ambiance, Jenny’s vision to create the lyrics, “the feeling of being somewhere mesmerizing and confusing, that ultimately you don’t quite belong in” is achieved.

The video stays within the boundaries of red and blue only. Red symbolizes passion, danger and power. While blue is associated with calmness and intuition. This is an interesting take to combine these two colors together because it perfectly represents the song and the helplessness of having hope. Should she listen to her heart or her mind? There’s a push and pull inside of her battling the question of “should I stay or go?”.  Palacio understands it’s her time to leave but still has hope that things might change despite the love is fading. Through her lyrics, she begins to realize this feeling and has a hard time parting with it being over.

The juxtaposition of how dreamy and upbeat the sound is compared to the words she’s singing is something to admire. It makes the viewer forget how sad the situation truly is. Jenny is emotionally alone as she says, “ghosts walk among us” which is physically represented in the video as she’s the only person there. In the shade of red, viewers can see her sitting down and holding onto herself. Opposed to when the lighting is blue, her figure becomes blurred and static.  As she repeats the line, “you didn’t mean it and it kills me…yeah that kills me,” tells a second confirmation that she’s aware the intentions weren’t pure towards her. She even confesses, “I know I’m just a thought when it’s convenient…I know I’m meant to leave before it’s bad,” which lines up perfectly with the theme of this video.

Palacio’s sci-fi-inspired world ultimately feels like a trance. A cycle that keeps going in circles switching back and forth between two sides. However, the track “serves as a reminder to take a step back” and reassess the situation. Power is not lost within these impressions, instead, the power to take action was always in your hands. You can always remove yourself for the betterment of your sanity at your convenience.
