Over the span of three days, independent tape label Burger Records has gone from a thriving music powerhouse to a disbanded disgraced sonic memory. Following a flood of sexual assault and misconduct allegations, the Orange County label and record shop attempted to right the wrongs brought to light but that was not enough for supporters and women recording acts.
After issuing a full action plan in which the former president Lee Rickard would resign, the introduction of an all “female imprint” and new leadership, the label has announced instead they would completely shut down according to Pitchfork.
However, before their announcement, former business programming partner, Total Trash Productions released an official statement on their website confirming that they have severed ties with the label. In their statement, they announced that the Burger Boogaloo Festival would continue under a new name stating “the label’s involvement was always fairly superficial” adding “they simply lent their name to the festival”.
One of the then label’s largest acts, NOBUNNY, was including in those allegations. He has since released a statement admitting that he “used my power and influence to take advantage of young women and teenage girls” adding, “I am also someone who has used his power to hurt others.
