Garage rock band The Beths won’t let up! The New Zealand four-piece returns with new single, “I’m Not Getting Excited” off their forthcoming album, Jump Rope Gazers (out July 10 via Carpark Records).

The track is a snowball of fast overdriven power chords and smooth vocals juxtaposed against sludgy instrumentation. Liz Stokes’ softer vocals mix with the song’s fast-tempo and punk energy, which allow “I’m Not Getting Excited” to feel at home both with a moshing crowd or a Sunday afternoon spent relaxing. While Stokes’ vocals remain smooth throughout, the searing and saturated guitar solo by Jonathan Pearce reinforces the single’s raw and gritty sound.

In an autotuned world of studio-produced pop music, this solo helps remind the listener of the raw power of more traditional instruments. The track walks the fine production line of muddyand too clean,. Pearce’s guitar solo is further complemented by the band’s stop motion music video, which progressively grows more psychedelic until peaking during this climactic moment.

The songwriting highlights The Beths’ incredible poeticness. The song’s lyrics are steeped in a 21st-century dread and are very relevant in the age where social media actively defines sense of self.

In discussing the basis for her lyrics, Stokes goes on to talk about ‘the imposter syndrome’ stating, “people always ask ‘are you excited!?’ and it’s a fair question because exciting things do happen to us sometimes… Support slots, overseas tours, music releases. Stuff we’ve dreamed about for years. So the correct answer is always yes.”

Later adding, “but the truth is that deep down there’s a tiny Liz saying, ‘don’t get excited.’ She is certain that anything good that could happen will most likely not happen, because of a freak accident. Or because somebody finally realizes that we aren’t worthy, shouts ‘phony!’ and takes everything away. I wrote ‘I’m Not Getting Excited’ last year, well before everything really did get taken away. From everyone. It feels like the song has a new context, but we don’t know what it is yet. And now we all share a blurry, uncertain future.”
