Alternative band IDLES’ new single, “Mr. Motivator,” is riddled with distorted guitars, a thumping kick drum beat, and heavy vocals that harken back to early Black Sabbath records. In true, IDLES fashion the track’s lyricism is heavy with both political commentary and societal angst.
Despite being recorded at the height of quarantine, the visual still manages to insert their unique quirkiness within the filmed at-home production. The video features the team and their family’s best rendition of a 1980s home work out montage dressed outrageously, with moves to match this level of ridiculousness.
This evokes and parodies the types of videos people have been posting on social media sites like Instagram and Tik Tok throughout the Coronavirus outbreak. Pairing the track’s brash sound and their strong ideological stance the video’s absurdity speaks to the desperate ways in which the social media-obsessed society struggles to keep themselves both entertained and busy.
