To quote the old cliché, for rising UK R&B singer, Ego Ella May, third time may very well be the charm. The songwriter has released the official music video for her third single, “Give A Little” off of her upcoming debut album, Honey For Wounds (via Upper Room Records).
Although comparisons for newer recording acts are often unwelcomed, the Brits’ firm hold onto the fundamentals of neo-soul is almost as if musical forces Angie Stone and the late Amy Winehouse had a love child.
From “How Long Til We’re Home” and “Girls Don’t Always Sing About Boys” now to “Give A Little”, May confidently walks the tightrope of R&B, Jazz with a dash of Blues. While May’s vocal range and abilities shine through on the new track, what stands out the most is the richness of her storytelling.
Enlisting the help of director Natalie Wilson, the official music video creates a piercing visual to match the ardent lyrics’. In the video you find the story of two Ego Ella Mays. One that seems to be quite deeply in-tuned and connected with her community. Whereas on the other end of the spectrum is an Ego Ella May that seems distant and at times ignored.
From the framing of repeat separation to the London skyline as a stark background carefully synced with the song’s lyrics, it is hard not to catch the theme of division. Whether the track is speaking directly to Ego Ella May’s personal career when you hear, “signed a deal I settled for”, or she’s referring to today’s racial climate when she sings, “somebody told me that the prize is in Heaven/but what about living today,” Ego Ella May’s debut album could not come sooner!
